Does the inner need lubrication, or is it coated in something?

Nylon coated.

Just been under whilst still on ramps, can feel ridges of a cable. Even if nylon coated is it worth a spray with silicone lubrication ?

Silicone is fine. If it's nylon coated any other lubricant will make it 'sticky'. You can normally feel the strands of the cable through a nylon coating. Hand brake cables on Ducatos don't give much trouble but it's worth spraying grease on the swivel tree.

The activation mechanism has been covered in my old tub of Castrol lm grease, time get back under. Wipe and squirt.
