Just out of interest, what is the average cost for a hab service ?

I've had 3 done over the past few years and range from £120 to nearly £200. All for basically the same service, the cheapest under NCC paperwork.

Do you need one for guarantee / water ingress warranty ? If so you need to read the small print some manufacturers state that it has to be done by NCC Service Centre or Dealer to get a stamp. IMHO its a waste of time and money. They are just charging you to see if they can find anything wrong to charge you to fix.

Most probably ought to called a basic inspection not a service as they don't involve any servicing just switch stuff on and see if it works

Trouble is if the called it an Inspection who would want to pay for it. Calling it a Habitation Service makes it sound much GRANDER than it actually is. The fact that cleaning out the fridge flue and checking gas is sometimes charged as an extra.

To me, it's peace of mind that an expert, or at least a knowledgeable person, has checked it all over and either put right or warned me of potential problems, important as the van gets older. Okay no-one can forecast when something is going to break suddenly but that's modern machinery for you.
My service/inspection/call it what you will is included with the vehicle annual service/MoT and I use someone I respect and trust and is well known on here. I can't tell you therefore exactly the cost but I consider it money well spent.

I don't have/need a habitation check at my house. If something doesn't work correctly or fails I get it fixed. The m/h and my house have fuses for the electrics and detectors for CO which are the only 'invisible' dangers. Admittedly neither has warranty conditions applicable and I do have my gas boiler at home serviced annually.

Yes, but your house doesn't rattle about on roads for 10,000 miles every year, and was probably better built than most motorhomes too!

Just to clarify this, it's not usually a NCC service centre that's needed but an AWS (Approved Workshop Scheme) service centre that's required which the NCC supports, it's important not to mix up the 2.

We've just paid £140 for a mobile AWS approved chap, he was very thorough and spent nearly 2 hours doing it including the damp report and gas system check.

If we had been willing to wait longer we could have used another one and paid less (about £120) but want the control panel replaced ASAP and Globecar wanted a report that its kaput.

Service Charges

  • Motorhome Habitation service: £198.00 (including VAT plus any parts required)
  • Mechanical service: £198.00 (including VAT plus any parts required)
But don't think this is all we can do! At Johns Cross we can supply and fit many different accessories at very competitive rates.

Labour Charges

Motorhome hourly rate: £60.00 (plus VAT)

Mechanical hourly rate: £60.00 (plus VAT)

True. but I'm a firm "If it 'aint broke......" chap. Odd though how my car always seems to be running at its best just when a service is due. o_O (and sometimes less well afterwards).

I will be straight round if you are willing to pay £70 an hour :)

Don't have much choice unfortunately, the cheapest was £120 without the gas fitness test.

My washing machine repairer charges 80 quid just to turn up and I expect my window cleaner earns 60 or 70 (cash ;) ) per hour with just a bucket, ladder and a squeegee. Twenty quid to do my house in about 15 to 20 minutes, then several more of my neighbours.
