The other day the grill door shattered, this is the first time we have used it to grill some food. Closed the door and the springs took over so last couple of inches it whipped in , my wife said just get rid and we can have another drawer in it’s place.

OMG how awful, don’t be too hasty getting rid though, warranty or perhaps not that expensive to replace? 🥩🥘🍗

The glass is normally available and pretty cheap too

When our cooker top exploded we were finding bits of glass for months.

We found it two meters away in the lounge area.

The new top was around £100 if I remember correctly. (y)

I think you have a Bilbos Celex? You should not close the grill door when using. You pull out the little piece of bent metal at the top to hold the door just open. (it's not a grill, it's a Warming Oven!)
From a former Celex owner.

To be honest with you we had a grill like that in our van, it was useless as it didn’t have a door seal and relied on the slide out heat shield. We removed it and replaced the grill with an oven with a proper double skinned door

Yes we pulled the metal strip out at the top of the grill/oven it was so not when I closed the after finishing, we tend to cook outside whenever possible.
Rang the dealer up to see if it was covered and it wasn’t but still worth asking. Bilbos are getting back to me to give me prices for new door/ or drawer which I think would be more useful.

£155! OMG thanks for the heads up, looks like I’ll be making another drawer😂

I never shut the door when grilling, even at home. It`s not recomended, and failure of the "oven" glass is to be expected?. It`s due to the uneven heat distribution, unlike when being used as a true Oven.

As far as I’m aware it won’t work when door is closed, as at home our grill the door has to be open which I did as there’s a metal tab that pulls out, think the glass was a little warm and the snapping action when closing has resulted in glass shattering.

if its flat glass any glaziers should be able to get a piece tempered probably a third of that pricei had a patio door double glazed unit made and tempered for £120 a year ago

Not so with a SMEV 555 grill, there is no interlock with the front door.

You don't have to use glass for the door, you could just use a piece of aluminium or stainless steel, so long as it is thick enough of course.

Don't trust that price at Norfolk marine, it just means they sold one 10 years ago at that price, been in there today, looked like they had been ransacked, and again online it in stock but nothing on the shelf. Our replacement oven was old new stock and only paid £150 for a proper oven.

When we bought the celex we did ask about an oven but cavity was to small.

The glass door on our Smev 555 grill shattered for no obvious reason second time using it. Price for a replacement from CAK is 145.00. Don't be fooled, any glass supplier can get you a heat resistant,, toughened piece of glass with safe rounded edges for around 25.00. You will have to savage all the old fittings and refix them to your new door with Stix All Crystal or something like. Use gloves & goggles when scraping out the broken glass from the fittings.

I could sell you a Smev complete for £80. Unused as far as I’m aware as I bought it to fit but she changed her mind
Let me know if your interested

We replaced ours with a microwave. :)

Thanks for the info but as I replaced the door as described I need to give it a fair trial this season, if we get a season that is, because this item is only a grill it should not be used with the door shut so it doesn't need a seal. I only put the first post up as info so that anyone considering buying a replacement door is aware there is a cheaper option. Cheers.

Our lid which covers the sink did the same for no obvious reason, £100 + from memory.

Just realised this is a resurrected thread:Smile:
