Planning to head back to Germany later in the year and after some ideas.
In the past we have done the Rhine, Moselle, Neckar, Black Forest and Bavaria along with other odd bits.
Most I would be happy doing again other than the Black Forest which I wouldn't bother with again. (not sure why it didn't really click though weather was a bit iffy and we were pushed for time)
Not relay a city fan though we liked Heidelberg.
Thinking we may head to the north as have not been there.
I'm more or less ruling out the old east for this year due to current fuel costs
We have three ish weeks so may do a bit of Holland as well
Tend to stop in a place for three days or so
All weather dependent
Inspiration required please

Yes, go north. Lübeck, Kiel, Rugen Islands, beautiful Baltic sea.
Some ideas on my trip report here

If you are going in September and have a dog with you check the website for the open air swimming baths at Fockbeck ( its three pools Olympic sized ) They do a doggy open day in mid Sept just before they close the baths. Its great fun we could not get ours off the slides and water splashes all money raised supports the local animal shelter, the stelpatz is next door to it. I would move around the area no problems with parking and loads of stelplatz , as Annie says The Baltic area is well worth the trip and the old East Germany if you like history try Poara with the singing sands and Peenemunde.

We love Germany, lived there for two periods and one of our sons has lived there.

The Alpinstrasse is a great route to follow. (y)

I’m in the Black Forest now, having done similar to the OP- Mosel/Rhine/Romantic route … The Black Forest is a bit of a disappointment.. like the curates egg, good in parts.

If you've never been to the Hymer Museum in Bad Waldsee, I highly recommend it. The town is very nice and make sure to visit the Erwyn Hymer Center. Nearby you've got the beautiful Allgaü region. On the shore of Lake Constance is Lindau on a fairylike island setting.

We played dot to dot with Schloss' and Bergs - It was great to wake up at a different random place each day

Try Wesel. 3 different sites beside the Rhine lovely little town. Not far from the Dutch boarder. Mind the cows. Fantastic pizza’s

Thanks folks
A few ideas to check out
Ultimately it will be down to the weather forecast as we trundle off the ferry

Would love to do this but can’t find any details for this year. Do you know the best website to find details on please?

If you are in the North and want to try Holland give Dokkum a try, just over the border , a lovely little picturesque town with a cracking site near the playing fields on the edge of town with an easy stroll to shops, bars and restaurants etc, highly recommend, have a great time in Germany , it’s our next on the list to do 😉

As is the VW Town & Museum of Wolfburg. I was there a few years ago and the complete town is VW.

Out of the 100's of vehicles I saw, only 2 were not from the VW family of makes. They were Transits.

Big carpark for overnighting and even if your not into VW, it's still worth a visit!

Eberbach (20miles east of Heidelberg) is an old small town that’s worth a visit. Nice small campsite (Campingpark Eberbach) there right on the banks of the River Neckar. Fab Italian Restaurant on site too. Town is surrounded by hilly woodland with lots of (dog) walking paths, and viewing spots.
Drive north on Route 46 to Erbach- another very old and interesting small town with its own Palace, Orangery and Gardens (Beware the big black cat that likes to taunt dogs!)
Bischofsheim is an interesting place too.
Museums at Sinsheim and Speyer are superb and of course, Heidelberg is worth a visit.

ukfetchfan agree with you re the Neckar stayed on a couple of very nice sites. Less busy than the Rhine and Moselle.
One at Neckargemünd was very handy as you could catch a boat into Heidelberg. Train was also an option.
Was also very impressed with the Museums at Speyer which has a camp site attached and the town was fine for a wander. Still to visit Sinsheim some time.
If the weather is not playing ball for the top of Germany I may well be back there.
Off the beaten track a bit is Dahn which is a must if you have a geology interest. Been there three or four times and yet to spot a uk vehicle.

We were there 2 days ago, very nice but very very busy.
Note they have national holiday on Friday so expect it to be even busier next weekend
Currently sitting at Titisee, plan to move to the north of the Blackforest tomorrow then on wednesday find a nice and sit out the busy weekend.

We went to Colditz castle! (On motorbikes and stayed in the Youth Hostel part of the castle) That was excellent, though a very long way back, on a motorbike. The dams that the Brits 'busted' in WW2 make a nice tour too, all lovely destinations to visit for the day now. (we did two WW2 themed tours on bikes. Hilariously one of the guys had a few bevvies and couldn't remember the code to get back into Colditz, leading to the unusual sight of a British person unable to get IN to Colditz....)

We probably won’t arrive until the Sunday but might make it Monday now, is it just the Friday or a long weekend?

If you are about on Ascension Day don't be surprised if you get woken by big bangs in the morning :(
