Were thinking getting away from it all the sky's will be clear with a bit of luck new year in the wild's of the Galloway forest park its three hrs driving from us.
Find a nice spot next to one of the many Lochside locations and bring in the new year next to a camp fire
maybe even have a bit of a BBQ sausage sizzle over the camp fire
any suggestions for somewhere to go as far away from fire works as possible will do us don't think wee will have many first footers out in the wilds.

Galloway Forest Park is one of the best locations in UK for star-gazing, because there is very little light pollution like you get near the towns and cities. With a clear dark sky, it's amazing what you can see when your eyes adjust to the darkness after half an hour or so. You should be able to see the Milky Way.

If you take a pair of binoculars - any will do, but an 8 x 50 or 10 x 50 preferably -you can see thousands of stars wherever you look in the Milky Way.

If you get up early you can see Jupiter and Mars in the South-east. They rise about 5 AM and by 7.30AM the sun will be too bright to see them. If you can rig up a stand to point the binoculars at Jupiter you will be able to see four tiny dots in a line that are four of its moons.

If you have a laptop you could download Stellarium, a free astronomy program. Set the Location, Date and Time. You can switch the names and outlines of the constellations on and off, so you can find your way around the sky.

I expect you know this already, when your eyes are adjusted to darkness, even a brief flash of white light means they have to start adjusting all over again. Red light, as long as it's not very bright, allows you to see things, read books, write notes etc without losing the adjustment to darkness.

Happy Hogmanay to you and your grandson.

Not been to the forest area proper for some wilding. However ,got as far as Caervarelock Castle and Glencaple earlier this year and that was really enjoyable.... . Quite taken with the idea of being in the dark skies forest areas over the new year, so might well tootle on over there tomorrow or saturday. Would make a welcome change for us , away from the usual new year mayhem of crowded places .

Sitting pitched up in the Galloway Hills, can only hear the water in the burn. Shame its overcast, no stars. Happy New Year to everyone when it arrives.
