Long time
At last the little Border Terrier X Jack Russell we got beginning of October is finally settling to her new way of life.
She still barks at noises outside, man has she got a bark. Apparently the Border is bred to oust Foxes from their holes and their bark can be heard from about 10ft under ground luckily the Jack side of her helps a tad!!!
She still needs socialising with other dogs as she goes in all guns blazing, teeth at the ready and growling, we will have to get a muzzle for her then at least she will be able to get close without doing damage.
She dislikes men, took her 3 days to make friends with hubby, now she loves him but barks at strangers when out.
She now understands several commands-wait, leave, sit, and finally she’s got her head around shaking a paw for a treat-that ones only taken about a month to sink in.
We cant let her off her lead yet as she has no recall, but we sometimes she is allowed out on a long training lead (a light rope) and as long as there is no one else around she is quite well behaved!
We are getting there, she loves cuddles & kisses but wind her up too much and the teeth appear. I don’t think she had the puppy training she should have had.
Oh, yes, she‘s bitten me 3 times now and she nearly got taken to a rescue home!
She will come round but may well take a year or two!

Blimey I wouldn't fancy my newish rescue biting me but tbf he is a Doberman ? and luckily he has no aggression at all, I think I should of called him soppy.
Well done though you deserve a medal for putting up with being bitten 3 times, not sure I could put up with a dog that bites.

There is no such thing as a bad dog - it's always down to the owner and how the dog has been treated. Unfortunately it can take a while to train the bad habits out of them - but it's really worth it in the end.

Well done and keep up the good work!

Long time
The first time she bit me drew blood but I deserved it, she had just had a long car journey to our van, didn’t know where she was nor what was going on and I reach in to uncoils the travel harness, couldn’t blame her.
The next time-no blood-was playing and she got a bit heated.
Third time didn’t connect with my hand just my coat, my fault again.
She isn’t nasty, I think just misunderstood, although I wish she wasn’t so bolshy when meeting other dogs, might be a protection thing as she went loopy in the van when she saw hubby talking to someone outside!
Time will tell!

Our last dog was a border terrier. The best dog we ever had. Lived until he was nearly 16 but in the end had loads of health problems. Despite being a calm and friendly dog we could never let him off the lead and we were told when we first got him by an old guy with terrier experience and knowledge that we should never let him off. We now have a Welsh Terrier that is the most beautiful dog we've ever had but also the most difficult. He used to give us the odd bite and can never go off lead. Tried all kinds of training but the only thing that worked is his own maturity. At four years of age he has settled down a lot and has a great deal of personality. Many dogs bark because of fear and also due to 'lead defensiveness'. We have a place called the Dogs Country Park near us...three enclosed fields where you can let your dog off the lead with other dogs. He responded well to this when he was young and got a lot from it in terms of socialising. Perhaps there is something like this near you.
Lots of exercise works well to calm a dog and you also have to be careful not to give too much affection as they can develop separation anxiety. The other thing we noticed was that he became very passive and settled when we put a coat on him, this also works with a body harness. When we introduced him to the grandson he got excited and kept jumping on him to play. Putting a harness on him soon settled him to the extent that he would just sit alongside the grandson and watch him play. This strange phenomenon wa

s first noticed when we put a xmas jumper on him when he was about one. Keep trying and she will soon settle down and be a big part of the family.

Friends had a border, walked off lead (where appropriate), very friendly with people and dogs. Do you have anywhere secure near you that allows dogs off lead. There are a couple of farms around here that rent out fenced fields. Also our Rescue Centre hires out its exercise area. Could be useful for training recall.

Our rescue collie doesn’t bite but his claws are lethal! One scratch caused OH’s arm to bleed for more than 24 hours.

Agree about the coat. We put our dog’s towelling robe on during fireworks and it does seem to help.

Our Charlie is a Border/JR cross. He's very sweet tempered and easy to handle. But he barks at anything coming near the house and MH. He's also the first dog we have had we can't let off the lead. His urge to chase anything which moves is so strong plus he will eat anything, no matter how vile, he finds which is or was vaguely edible. :)

It looks like you might be starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel. Your love and perseverance seems to be winning Fudge over. Well done for where you are at so far.

She like to try and get in the front of car, even though she’s tethered and got net up.

Aaah bless her. Start as you mean to go on I say. She will soon get used to it as long as you stick to the rules and not send mixed messages.

Took Fudge onto beach today there was no one in sight so let her off lead-completely free. She was good stayed with us then went off to look at something, killed some seaweed & eventually came back for a treat!
There’s no way I will let her off if anyone or dog is in sight as her eyesight is brilliant and she won’t stop once she gets going!
I have a ‘squeak’ in my pocket-from a toy and that works a bit like a clicker.
I have to remove the squeaks from any soft toys otherwise she wrecks said toy in minutes!

Thunder jackets work very well for some dogs helping to calm them down in all sorts of stressful situations, maybe worth a try.
