We are off over the channel later this week and haven’t decided where to go so thought about coastal Normandy/Brittany. We don’t usually go this early in August so are not sure how busy sites will be ( mostly aires but the occasional campsite or camping car park). We thought with the warm weather that having access to water would be good so we could cool off if necessary. Of course we could also head inland to some lakeside places but we are not sure where these are whereas finding the sea is easy! When do things quieten down in August. Are we best to leave the coast until on our way back. We have four weeks.

French school holidays finish September 2nd. May be worth heading inland first then to the coast?

As it seems you can choose your timing of the littoral part of your tour, the safer option must surely be to visit the coast towards the end of your time away. It will still be warm.

We never, ever, under any circumstances, tour France in August, so I cannot speak with first hand knowledge, but I think there is a clue there.

That said I hope you enjoy your trip.

PS One of the French magazines did a feature on lakeside places to stay - if I still have it, I will let you have a copy.

CampingCar magazine - 1277 Aires with direct access to a lake.

I remember now, the one I was thinking of was just lakes where you could camp and fish. I can't find it, sorry.

A search term to give that nice Mr Google is <<camping car au bord du lac camping>> or just <<bord du lac camping>>. It seems that many of the tourist offices are promoting lakeside camping as are campsites.

That should test our Duolingo French! Thanks for the link..

Apart from the obvious tourist spots, France is generally OK in august. The main thing is there is more room, but the other is that the families tend not to go for aires so while the campsites are probably full there is a good chance of finding space on aires. There are lots fabulous beaches in Nw France, have a great time.
