French answer to wild camping (illegal rave)

I do use instagram, well I have an account, but the link is broken.

Worked for me. Some angry French farmers turning over peoples vans with tractors. Presumably for having a rave on their land.

I do Instagram.

Basically French Farmers utilising their vehicles to remove illegal ravers vehicles.

Two tractors flipping a van with people inside. Whatever they did wrong it seems a little extreme. Couldn't they get done for attempted something or other?

I never realised there were people inside initially so edited the post above as I put a laughing emoji on it. 😬

I think most French farmers get away with anything.

We were on a little campsite in Normandy a few years ago. We were talking to the owners about the long drawn out difficulties that some groups of travellers can cause for landowners in England. The campsite owner said there had been an incident on a bit of land opposite the campsite once but that within hours of arrival the local police had appeared and simply moved them off!

I was locking the gate after a Thetford Bash a few years back, and as I was about to leave a traveller was trying to turn in. I locked up but raised an alarm with the Rugby club. The response was surprisingly fairly laid back. Apparently, they had previously had group turn up. On that occasion they had contacted all the players who had turned out and "Escorted them from the premises".

Revolvers drawn....no argument.

The French have dedicated sites for the travelling community called "Gens du voyage" so the Gendarmes move them on to one of those if they try to set up somewhere they shouldn't.

16 pitches doesn't seem many, to me. There were regularly a couple of proper old fashioned wooden romany gypsy caravans and their horses encamped whilst passing through, in what was always called 'Wassen' until the late 1970s, when the council turned Wassen pool into a lake which became mega popular with windsurfers and the whole valley became Sandwell Country Park, with barriered vehicular access complete with height/width restrictions. My mum and dad originally then enjoyed walking for miles along the improved footpaths that had strategically placed benches and waste bins, plus the dog poo bins so that was a real improvement - but then found they frequently couldn't get on the carpark cos there was a competition taking place that week, or it was already jam packed with lake users vehicles, so, with no bus travelling along Forge Lane, it was too far to walk without anywhere to rest, before going for a planned, pleasant walk.

The council site says there's a transit site at Smethwick, but no details of where or how many places.

Was always a proper romany van and his horse along Packington Lane - but after Packington Estate built the golf course and country club so vehicular traffic including delivery lorries after the heavy construction work was finished, had increased massively and the road widened and the wide grass verges tarmacced over - no way could a horse be rested or a van parked along there. Shame, cos it was always nice to see for the passer by in their car or on foot, along the lane. The family that owned packington so I was told, used to make him welcome and he was certainly asked to do 'odd jobs' from time to time. Have wondered at odd times if he was also known the the Fetherstone- Dilkes, at Maxstoke Castle. (and there's a place with an interesting history, if you happen to need another one in Warwickshire)

They don’t need many pitches on a transit site.

They have to leave details and there is a small deposit and payment, hence no traveller will use them.

Effectively they are only there to enable the council to move people on and it works very well.

Fascinating about Sandwell Valley. The Forge lake was built as part of the Tame flood relief scheme which works very well indeed. You don’t hear of flooding in Perry Barr for this reason.
