We are Newbies...
Sorry if repeating but couldn't find anything on this from 2014
We are 'trying before we buy' next week (thank you to member who recommended Hire Company near W-S-M/Bristol). We will probably need to go towards London and Liverpool at some point in the week - does anyone have any recommendations at all? We are also interested in free but safe overnight stops as we weren't expecting to be paying so much to stay on sites! Thank you!

You are perhaps looking at the wrong type of sites, have a look at the smaller 5 van sites and you you may get a pleasant surprise.
Most 5 van sites are administered through the two big clubs which require membership to use them a far as I’m aware

Ahh but some are registered like our CL by other organisations like Motorhome Fun, so you do not need to be a member of one of the big two clubs. Keep looking KimnGary, try Search for Sites.

Moonfruit wild camping might help? Lots of cheap places to stay. Have you considered pub stop overs? I stayed next to a reservoir, close to the NEC for free a couple of years ago .... So there are places out there if you look for them

I've tossed it off in Frodsham, about 20 miles from Liverpool. This was three years ago though.

I often have to say in laybys between North and South. 60% of time it can be ok but have had a lot of bad experiences.

Please consider safety as a factor. For what it will cost, minimal, Quackers site would be worth considering.

Woodside farm.
Woodside Field Motorhome Park, Old Sodbury, near Bristol, Sth Gloucestershire

Depends how near to Liverpool want to be, but it’s a nicer journey going up the welsh/english border and car parks in Powys are free of charge

if youre travelling around M6/M1/A14 junction there is a great little place to stay the night at Manor Farm - cost is minimal, i think we paid £6 to stop over and then my wife decided to spend about £40 in the farm shop the next day LOL - they also serve great food at reasonable prices, especially sunday lunch apparently ... you will just have a hard standing and access to water/waste (from memory) -plus a pub is about 50 yards away !!

I bow to your superior knowledge of keeping up to date with local dogging sites dear, all the more reason to stop surely? I love dogs anyway ;) I meant boy racers, but perhaps they also have dogs:unsure:

I still have family living in the village so am kept up to date with the goings-on 😀 The council actually closed one of the nearby car parks for a while to try and stop the behaviour.

Stayed here couple of times for free, just north of Birmingham. Usually go for a meal in the pub.

Small car park at Dee Sailing Club next to Thurstaston Country Park (Thurstaston on the Wirral) for a scenic view over the Dee to Wales.
What Three Words - typically.standing.bullion

Or New Brighton prom (as mentioned above) for very close to Mersey Tunnel.
