don't own one yet
Hiya, I'm Danny and my wife's Dawn. we're 43 and 44 years old and our kids have grown up. So were planning the next phase of our life.

I want to buy a caravan and car. Buy them and store them in Spain. So we can fly in pick them up and drive to wherever takes our fancy.

I currently work shifts and every month I get 10 consecutive days off.

buying over there means the car and van are set up for Europe.

How would I register them not being a resident. I'm thinking I can register it with the storage facilities. Maybe some do inclusive packages that includes a by/annual ITV.

I'm at the early stages of planning this, so and tips would be welcome

jumar, jumartoo, gus-lopez - can you help with this? I think insurance and being able to register the vehicle as a non-resident may be difficult to sort?

A NIE number is needed to buy the car and caravan....

A registered address is needed to be able to pay annual taxes on the car.

The address would also be a requirement to be used to pay parking fines or other traffic violations.

I believe caravans over a certain weight carry their own registration number plate, and are regulated.

Having a car/caravan or a motorhome in the National registered number plate of a country you intending using in, is OK...some people think they can do the same with UK vehicles...but that's complicated.

You can own a foreign vehicle and drive it on UK driving licence, provided it's insured and has an ITV.

Anyone want to add anything I've missed ?

Could you buy more than one caravan and store them on campsites, where they are kept in storage until you want to use them, then the site would place them on a pitch ready for your arrival.... I have seen that done in France, so perhaps it might be an option in Spain. Or why not France and Spain?

I think the trick is not to buy expensive caravans, just ones that are sound and don't leak. Could you even buy them in the UK and tow them over? So long as they never go on the road again and live on the campsites of your choice then they shouldn't be subject to any legislation re road use?

Another option might be to look at GoBooney.com - and fly out and rent motorhomes, they have some well priced ones all over Europe, so you're not limited to one country or one location.....

Welcome, I wish my kids would grow up.

They are quite a bit older than yours 🤣
