Hi all fellow members.

Van = Burstner Ducato A747 2004 reg less than 27,000 miles

We have just had the shock of our lives when a routine check on a noise gear change between 1st and 2nd has shown up a major problem with the clutch and gearbox with a £1800+ bill to pay!

Seems that a small rubber bung under the engine (inspection hole for clutch) has been missing and water/dirt has got into the internal workings of the clutch. Rust has built up over a period of time and cause a major issue with the whole clutch which has put pressure on the gearbox as well!

Has anybody experienced a similar problem and did you have any re-course back to FIAT directly on this matter? Seems like a design fault to me for this to happen in such a short time.

Help greatfully appreciate on this issue.:Rofl1:

think there was a problem about water getting in .saw a report i think in MMM

Hi sorry to hear yet another tale of woe about Fiat engineering. Have you had the van from new, if so you may have some claim on the garage who did your annual servicing. they probably removed the bung to check the clutch and forgot to put it back. Or even failed to notice it was missing If you bought secondhand, then no chance I'm afraid. The design incorporated a BUNG TO KEEP SHIT, etc OUT. If that is missing then not a fault of Fiat unless the bung is prone to falling out and therefor of poor design.

Well in all fairness that sounds a very expensive repair?
Is it at a fiat dealer?
You could easily source and fit a recon or exchange gearbox and have it fitted for I recon half that ammount.

Thanks for the comments so far.

Van secondhand so not likely to get any help from Fiat.
Service by local mechanic not even dealer!
Recon parts - good question but alway wary about this as could be sold another major problem with parts going wrong etc. Not even sure where to source one?

I tend to agree the price is all out of proportion for what has been diagnosed, Unless of course a brand spanking new fiat gearbox is being fitted:Eeek:
You may be interested to know that a fully reconditioned gear box(half price) carries exactly the same warranty as a brand new one
Any garage worth its salt can source one for you:thumb:
If they can't your in the wrong Garage
