Good evening all.
We have a Hymer 2007 with the 3lt engine which is wonderful but i find the gears really short,i can be in 3rd or 4th gear really quickly at as little as 30mph. Now my question is would it benefit and make a difference to change the wheel size from 15" to 16",its going to cost a few quid but if it makes a considerable difference worthwhile.

I have the same engine and think you get through the gears quite quickly as it is such a powerful lump.

Don’t know about the wheel change but I did up my tyres to 225 for greater load capacity and discovered that rather than the speedo reading more than the actual speed it almost matched true GPS speed. Presumably the bigger tyre did have an effect on gearing.

I've got 16" wheels on the Augusta same engine etc. but the gears are still short twix 2-3-4 so I wouldn't think it worth worrying. The other problem (never mind speedo etc.) is REVERSE!!! the reverse gear is very high on this config and I find I need to slip the clutch to go backwards at any kind safe speed.

So I recommend you keep your 15" wheels for reversing and swap them for 17" when going forwards. :)

15" wheels normally shod with 215/70 tyres 16" 225/75.
The 16" will do 24 less revolutions per km or speed difference will be 5.58%.
Probably not enough to notice.
Camper chassis have a low ratio final diff you would get better results changing the diff for a standard van one.

And the problem is?

Thanks everybody for your input, It seems really like a unnecessary mod so i think when i change the tyres ill have 225/75/15.
Its probably just something i need to get used to. My works van is the new transit custom and the drive is so different in the ducato to the transit but still love it,just really wondered if anybody else had any concerns or if it was just me(y)

Just one point if you have the @5" wheels that means you are on the light chassis. When we bought our 1st Hymer I ruled out the 3lt due to weight decided it wasn't practical on a 3500kg chassis unless of course you are plated at 3850kg.

It is 3500kg but thinking of uprating to 3850kg

I’m on 15inch wheels with the 3 litre. I’ve put 225/70/15 tyres on which is a slightly bigger tyre or circumference. Also it’s plated at 4ton light chassis’s. I looked into 16inch wheels but it’s a tight fit on the rear also you have to get the special I think 118 stud pattern because standard 16inch won’t fit.

Did you have the michelin agilis camping tyres in 225/70/15?

Yes. now I’m changing the van which has got 16inch so I’m selling snow chains and snow socks for the 225/70/15 tyres they are brand new never opened £40 if anyone wants them
