Afternoon folks.

I think we all know that we can check on the MOT history of a vehicle via the Gov. website.
We can also check on whether any particular vehicle has a current MOT or whether the Cert. has expired.

My question is this; is that information 'live'? ie, When the Cert is issued by the garage, does it update the Gov. site or does the system play catchup.

When I've checked in past it's always been updated the following day

Not sure if it's instantaneous but know mine was updated within an hour or two.

It is only instantaneous if the garage actually input the information on to the system. My nephew had one done one september & when he went to tax the car the following May it said " no mot"? Garage had not put the test on the system.

Clear as mud then.
It depends on the garage.
Having said that, surely if the garage print out a cert then it must go on the system??? There again, it's a Gov. site. Nuff said.

I think that the tester logs on at the start of the test, then completes the test, and then registers the result of the test.
There is no ability to log it, in advance, or after the event. If so it’s not a proper test.
Maybe in misunderstanding it but I’m sure Geo will know.

Quite so. My tester (a biker) always finishes the test on my 1927 motorbike before the designated amount of time has elapsed and we have to wait until he can 'end' it on the computer. He always says: "Whilst we're waiting I'll just take it for a run around the block" (which isn't a requirement of the test) so I suspect that may be the incentive for him to finish the test with ten or fifteen minutes to spare. ;)

My garage doesn't print out certificates. I download mine from the DVLA website.
Same here.. had MOT done last week and I commented on the quality of the print out of the certificate and was told that he is no longer under any obligement to issue a certificate but he does so as an obligement to his valued customers.

To give a possible scenario.
Custome drops of car leaves it I assume but matters not.
IT system failure. Cant log on check and obtain emergency testing code no code abandon mot.
Using code on paper work carry out old fashioned paper mot issue emergency test certificate to customer.
Tester Carrie's on working in emergency mode checking before every test that system is still down.
System is now back up and code disappears carry on doing computer mots untill you have done then you MUST log back in and input all your backed up emergency tests.
He may have just had the one and forgot to imput it. BUT the customer is still protected by the emergency test certificate.
The tester meanwhile is job hunting in case he doesn't loose his licence as well as his job.

I put a vehicle in for MOT recently and before picking it up I went online to check status and found it had passed. I then was able to tax it online so didn't need to drive straight back home.

That not how I did it, but although technically I am still an mot tester I haven't done a test for about 40 years  :roflmto:

I don't believe they were giving out certificates then,This would have been september 2011. It was shown on the invoice for the mot & service.
