Eu pet passport.. Please explain

So if we get an EU passport for Dillon I understand we will be able to enter Euro area without an AHC..
Is there a requirement for worming tablets the same as when we used to come home ?

Moving forward to coming home...........

Also, when returning home do we ( UK ) recognise the EU passport ?
Will the dog have to have to sets of jabs to keep both the UK passport up to date as well as the EU one ?

Worming tablet requirement is the same as before. It can be entered either on the AHC you went out on, or in the nice new EU pet passport (or both, if you want).

When returning to the U.K. the new EU passport is fine. I’ve already been there and done that.

Future rabies boosters will only need to be entered on the EU passport - and must be done by an EU vet.
Keep your old U.K. passport alongside your new EU one as it shows Dillon’s rabies vaccination history for continuity.

No, everything for entering the EU is as before except use the EU passport

In the general sense, no but worming is required if you are travelling directly to Norway, Finland, Malta, Ireland and Northern Ireland. In the case of the latter, I believe that until 1st October this requirement is being waived (but I’ve not been following the NI aspect so could be wrong on this).

Just make sure whatever rabies jag you get in EU is valid for 3 years as the 1 year ones might not be long enough if you dont time your next trip correctly.

I am just about to get an Eu pet passport whilst we are in Spain. Does the Eu vet transfer the rabies vaccination details from the UK passport as the jabs / tests were before Brexit and still within the 3 year period, or is it legal / acceptable to keep the UK passport and use that as evidence when entering the Eu in the future along with the Eu passport? Just wondering how it works to ensure the Eu passport contains the correct details when it is issued.

Yes, the worming tablet is exactly as before 24 to 120 hours before returning.
Yes, the U.K. recognises the EU pet passport. We returned using our brand new EU pet passport last month.
No, the normal annual boosters as recorded on their health booklet will suffice. However the EU only recognises the Rabies vaccine given in the EU countries. So the dog’s three yearly rabies vaccine will need to be administered in an EU country and recorded on the EU pet passport.

I asked my daughter (a vet) about our dog having multiple rabies jabs as just had her first here in UK to get an AHC to travel and hopefully get an EU passport. I was worried about her having another jab so soon.
She says that there is no risk or problem in giving a dog a repeat rabies jab and in fact they used to have to do this often when using titre tests that showed negative for antibodies so they would just give another inoculation.

This whole subject has become something of a minefield. Current rabies vaccination details can be transferred into an EU pet passport from an existing UK-issued pet passport or AHC - there is nothing that actually forbids this. However, not all vets are willing to transfer the details - some will insist on re-vaccination instead. With transference of details there are known instances of mistakes being made on the passport page relating to ‘Marking of animal’ (generally page 6), concerning the date of application or reading of the microchip. This must not postdate the date entered for the rabies vaccination. Also either the word ‘application’ or ‘reading’ must be deleted on the ‘Marking of animal’ page. This page is laminated by the vet and so you can not simply cross out the irrelevant word yourself afterwards. For this reason, some people are now preferring to get their dogs re-vaccinated for rabies even if it is not due.

It is very useful to take a look at the booklet ‘How to complete pet passports’ issued by APHA when we were still members of the EU. This shows clearly what to look for so you can check that the vet has completed everything correctly before you leave the clinic.

We got our Spanish pet passport back in April. The vet transfered all the info, including the UK rabies shot which had 18 months left.

We travelled back to the UK and did the usual worming tablet on the way back. No problem with pet control, they simply scanned for her chip on on we went.

Travelled back on the tunnel to France last Thurs, same thing, checked details and scan for chip. No issues at all.

Did not ask for UK pet passport at all.

Do not let a UK vet enter anything in the EU pet passport. It will invalidate it!
