Looks like it's gonna be fun!

This might end the threads about how likely overstayers are to get caught! From the article

"The system will help bona fide third-country nationals too to travel more easily while identifying more efficiently over-stayers "

Don't see the problem. Surely this is just the EU following the UK's example and 'taking back control of their borders'? ;)

We should be proud that we thought of it first :ROFLMAO:(y):giggle:
I don't see a problem with it in theory, it's about time security was better at borders, both in and out of the UK, the issue is how it's going to be managed and the impact it will have on the time it takes to get through border control. It's slow enough at present so this is likely to cause even bigger delays, there's already been a few threads about it and how it works in theory but the practicality of it, ie a bus load of holidaymakers having to get off to show their credentials etc, is gonna be a heck of an issue.

My only concern is how much longer will it take to go through immigration? I have queued for long periods to enter the US also Hong Kong. We may have to allow an extra hour or two to visit

It could well be like that at first but once details are in the system it's likely to be quicker using biometrics. We could probably negotiate with the EU to incorporate the biometric data in our passports.

It will cause delays that is for sure i have waited in lines for maybe an hour to get in the USA and they have 10 to 20 booths on the go, unless it can be done online before travel but i would thing not.

Accept their rules? With no input? Have you forgotten the Will of the People?

i wonder if that will include checking those waiting around the shores of France to leave? Or travelling through any EU countries? The reality is that they can already carry out those checks to see if a person has been in their country or the Schengen area longer than is allowed - and those unable to provide evidence should be dealt with in much the same way as anyone else - is it really that difficult for EU countries to apply a law indiscriminately?

EES will also contribute to preventing illegal migration and help to protect the security of citizens of Europe.

I could only see reference to EES in the article. So it looks as if the ETIAS visa waiver won’t be required until January.

Any one have any idea how we prove we have sufficient funds? I believe that £85 per day has been mentioned. 90 x 35 =£7650! Is this each or per family? If you have prepaid for the holiday is the amount the same?

This is not a new idea.

Back in the late 80's we used to go to East Berlin, you had to change up a minimum of US$ 25 per day into (worthless) OstMarks. There was nothing other than beer and food to spend the OstMarks on, So we would find a decent restaurant, the ones frequented by the East German Government people, and eat and drink as much as we possibly could, including on at least one occasion also paying for the meal of a couple next to us. Even then it would be difficult to spend $25 bucks in a single night.

Similar situation in 1985. As backpackers we crossed the border from France into Spain. The customs people wanted to see exactly how many Travellers Cheques we each had. Luckily it was more than enough, but they were turning around backpackers who did not have enough.

There has always been a requirement for travelers to have enough money to support themselves for the duration of their stay it just never been enforced much.

Works easy enough for the USA. I also read that May will be the start date and that could include a six month grace period.
