I’m thinking of buying 2 e-bikes next March and would like any recommendations on best way to insure them. Cover must include UK and Europe.

my house insurance is with the camclub and they added our 2 elec bikes uk and europe for free

House insurance for theft as long as the bike is locked to something secure by a Gold Secure Chain or similar. The towbar A-frame on the van is considered secure. I think it was about £20 extra?

As above, mine is insured as a separate item/value on my household insurance. It must be locked to something secure by an approved grade lock. Mine gets locked to one of my wheels when I'm on site and not using it. It folds, so it travels inside the van rather than on a bike rack.

I asked Saga do I need a special lock and they said no as long as it's fixed to something secure , I was surprised as I thought they would specify what type of lock.

I included ours on our house insurance (Halifax) which didn't cost much at all but as I found out beforehand stand alone policies are very expensive by comparison. If your current house insurer doesn't insure e-bikes (not all do) you could consider changing it to a company that allow you to put your bikes on too as it could well end up cheaper that way.

I did mine on the house insurance cost me an extra £40 with Saga.
Be very careful with Saga they change underwriters year to year. We had the bikes covered on our house policy had to let them know when going abroad. 3 months after renewal I phoned them to say I was going abroad, they said your bikes are only covered in the UK. Underwriters had changed like most people didn't read the small print as I thought I was just renewing the policy.

Don't bother about the bikes now as 5/6 years old so only worth about £500 - £600 each.

It is worth checking the maximum period that will be insured. We found many would have maximums of 28, 36 or 48 days which would not suit us. We ended up with Bikmo. No limit on period out of UK. Not the cheapest but really good cover. 2 x Ebikes value £8000 with an annual premium of £280.

Thanks to all for the advice we are with saga so will contact them when we buy the bikes next March
