Ive discovered a £6 telephone call on my mobile bill, further delving says it a premium rate number, a bit more work and I found it was when I called DVLA to ask about registering an import. The call was apparently 11 minutes so around 50p/minute to talk to them now. Outrageous.

I thought they were 0300 numbers and covered by inclusive tariffs.

Not the fault of the DVLA, I think.

Have a look at the rules set by OFCOM........

(…… https://www.ofcom.org.uk/search?query=What+are+0300+numbers?&site-search-submit= ……)

For 0300 numbers it says.......

Many organisations use 03 numbers as an alternative to more expensive 08 numbers.
Calls cost no more than calls to geographic numbers (01 or 02) and must be included in inclusive minutes and discount schemes in the same way. Calls from landlines and mobiles are included in free call packages.

030 numbers were specially designed for not-for-profit organisations, charities and public bodies to offer consumers a single point of contact nationally. The BBC, the Met Police, the RSPCA, Oxfam, Relate, some local councils, Ofcom and a number of government departments use 030 numbers.

Suggest you take the matter up with your cellphone service provider.....but just check first that if you are on a tariff which does not have unlimited call minutes, you had not already exceeded your monthly allowance when you called DVLA.

I just googled "DVLA phone numbers" this resulted in a series of "people also ask" results the first is a list of contact numbers all with a 0844 prefix.

Aint got the time to check, but does it say anywhere on the DVLA web site it is a premium number and advise the cost ?
Under EU law, it must be stated the number is premium rate OR offer a normal 'geographical' number.
This has just last week been confirmed by a law firm I took to task over this very subject.
This an extract from their mail to me:

I’d like to assure you that the quality of data we receive from XXXXX is normally excellent – we get very few complaints. I look forward to hearing back from you when you’ve had chance to talk to them. Regarding their 0845 number, you appear to be correct! I have emailed our Account Manager with your comment and will discuss this with him by phone tomorrow. They are actually a very large and trusted company in the industry, so the 0845 situation is rather embarrassing for them. I’m sure they’ll rectify this quickly.

jongood and lunarman ........ perhaps some of the links you found are either out of date or what often seem to be scams with 3rd parties offering links which are not directly to the service you are seeking. (e.g. Scams offering to provide EHIC cards at a cost who presumably have paid Google to appear in advance of the correct link direct to the Official Government site and similar scams when booking travel with an airline which re-direct you to a travel agency charging more to make the booking for you.)

I now always check the link is to the official Government site. If you just Google DVLA and make sure you get a link directly to the official DVLA site, you can check how to make contact for the particular type of query you have and will be given an 0300 number.

I'm starting to think this is the case. I did check the webpage and it said dvla but relooking at it its not a .gov one.

How pathetic is it that scammers are now even doing these things.

Just tried the Vehicle reg No. & it worked, 3rd one down.
