Mot test has identified a cracked rear leaf spring, would this be a good opportunity to upgrade to double leaf springs to improve ride and comfort.
Members views would be welcome.

I would say yes. If you gonna replace anyway and can afford the upgrade then go for it. (y)

There is a place in the midlands that makes uprated leaf springs. A very good idea if you are changing one anyway. Motorhomes are built on van chassis, but unlike a delivery van they are constantly loaded.. uprated springs will raise the rear of the van slightly and allow better suspension travel before bottoming out on the bump stops

A double spring might make the ride too harsh and the dampers might not cope either. If it's had one from new I would stick with that.

I was told that there are no shockers as such on the X250/X290 standard chassis but instead use rubber blocks, and that as was said earlier because motorhomes are always loaded, they are often sitting close or on to these blocks. Is that so?

There are dampers, like most vehicles and then there are spring assisters, which are also bump stops.

Have decided on double springs on the advice of the Spring manufacturer, ( Jones Springs, Walsall) who manufacture and supply at a very good price. Will report on ride and handling when fitting is complete. Pair of Rear Springs ÂŁ24o ex works can't be bad!

That sounds amazingly cheap. It'd be great if you could report your findings.

The ride on pre Defender (coil spring) Landrovers was improved in the same way. My MK111 short wheel base was solid on its original leafs, designed to work with a very heavy load only.

Second Jones springs very good easy to fit if you have the tools. Certainly improves the handling along with air bags.

If anybody is after new leaf springs or new front struts you should try SAP

Ask Mick as he changes many new vans like mine to full air also ambulances so the parts are redundant I am sure he would do a cracking deal on some. đź‘Ť
