Not familiar with the Ducato engine, but it looks like a vacuum solenoid, commonly used to operate a variable vane turbocharger amongst other things, and no, it shouldn't buzz. Does it feel excessively warm and have you noticed any difference in the van's running ?
Whip the two thin rubber pipes off the top (mark them first) and give it and the electrical connector a squirt of WD 40 or similar and see how it goes. A replacement will be about £40.

Is this noise apparent when idling at traffic lights for example? We too have a 130 Multijet and there is a weird, almost regular, buzzing from the front near side when idling. It's particularly apparent after a long stretch then coming to a roundabout or traffic lights. There's no juddering of the engine when pulling away but the noise seems strange.

Check it out..it may show you what you are looking for? Its the EGR on the Fiat ducato.

That's me!!!! :giggle:

Turns out that they are supposed to do that.

My understanding is (which might be off!) that when there's no load on the engine, typically while you're idling, they want to run the engine with as little fuel as possible to improve economy. But this 'lean' running increases engine temperature, which isn't good, but also means you end up producing higher NOx emissions. The solution is to re-circulate some exhaust gases back through the intake which keeps the temperature a bit lower (not sure I understand why... less oxygen???).

So when you're idling, you hear the ticking noise as the vacuum opens that solenoid, which opens the EGR valve. As soon as you apply a little throttle, it goes away. Nothing to worry about.

I have a similar problem with my 2009 Ducato but the pulsing 134 000 miles on the clock. It has had a new throttle body. A new EGR. The solnoid is a replacement and has a very noisy buzzing..when watmed up. I also have a engine light come on with a p402 excessive flow. Really done know what to do. If someone could help would really appreciate it.

When the throttle body was changed, did you fit a new cable also, if not, that may be your problem?
