My older 2.5 also has glow plugs, I thought the article was interesting as it showed the alternative method which I had never heard of before.

I had a Kia Sedona that had a heated manifold instead of glow plugs.

That’s the same idea as the older generation of truck drivers that used to set fire to an oily rag and hold it near the air intake whilst cranking the engine.
The only down side of this was the possibility of the rag being sucked into the engine or setting fire to something in the engine bay.

I had a Carnival here. I learnt not to touch the manifold when the ignition was on but not started.
