My husband is 70 in November can you please advise me what the stages of the application process are to retain the C1 cateogory. I am hearing some real horror stories about missing deadline dates and not being able to get the C1 added back on. Also I understand there is a requirement for eye tests and medicals - where is it best to get these done?

Start by getting the D2 and D4 forms. The D2 can not be downloaded, you have to have an original form. During lockdown the DVLA have not been posting D2 forms but you can get a D2/D4 pack from Main Post Offices (not Sub Post Offices).

The C1 can be reinstated at any time upon passing the medical, most problems occur with health conditions.

The medical and eyesight test is nothing to worry about. I have one every year to retain
my Class 1 HGV because I am over 65. There are various companies who do the medicals
and the eye test together. They tend to be cheaper than your own GP.
I always make copies of the two forms and my licence before sending them to DVLA. It has
been known for categories to be missing off a licence when it is returned. Personally I have
never had a problem. Just be careful when filling the forms in. The slightest mistake and it will
returned to you.
Keep on enjoying the ‘van👍

I went to a company that specialises in these tests. Several to choose from and most are nationwide. In my case it was carried out in a specially fitted out Transit van in a layby on the A21. It is not a "real" medical. They only physically checked my blood pressure and eyesight. The rest is just reading out the medical condition questions on the D4 form and recording on the D4 the answer you give. So in most cases it is almost self-certifying. The one I used had both the D4 and D2 forms to hand out. But I suggest you get the D4 form before you go, so you can look at the questions and decide what your answer is,

As others have said the delays and problems occur when you have one of the medical conditions that you are asked about on the form

I have used these as many other professional drivers always been great and have locations throughout UK .

In one occasion my medical took place in Bristol Bus station in the offices there

Further info.

Yhe medical can be done any time within the 4 months before renewal, but the whole application cannot be submitted before 3 months before renewal.

The licence will run for 3 years from the date DVLA issue it, so it is a bit of a lottery as to how long before you wish to submit it, as is submitted at 3 months before one could lose 2 months and next renewal is earlier than 3 years from expiry. However the licences are free, just a little more inconvenient.

No. The Optician and/or Doctor fills out and signs the D4 and hands it to you, that is the "medical and eye test". You then fill out the D2 and send them both to the DVLA.

Not sure what you mean by dettsjibg

Think it's just a case of fingers on the wrong keys and should read "getting".

Thank you all for the clarity of the Licence renewal process. It sounds quite straightforward really.

Just. one word of caution. It is now a requirement that the optician signs the (part of the) form for the eye test. Prior, the Dr could fill in the Details of the Eye examination from the Form the opticians give you after an eye test and sign it. that is no longer allowed. Any Eye test has to be no older than 3 months.

Not sure I understand this point. At D4 Drivers (which I have just had done) the Dr does the medical AND the eye test. No optician needed.

Some Doctors can do the eye test, at the beginning of the D4 form is a section for the Dr asking if they are competent to do do the eye test and if not must advise the applicant to visit an optician.

I think you will find that D4 will have both forms ready for you.

When you book with D4 Drivers it specially says the medical includes the eye test. If you use your gp you then need to go to the opticians - that’s my understanding anyhow.

Some gp's can and some can't, depends on their qualifications and equipment.

The questionnaire is available to read online. I think it’s important to thoroughly read the questions so you are able to fully answer them.

I make the point, because (my Most recent) D4 was returned by DVLA. For that very reason. By the time it re-reached me the 3 month limit had been past and they required a fresh eye test and signed by the optician not my G-P. I may have disposed of the letter from DVLA by now but I will check.

Edit:- It is possible the at the changes have been recent, and came about after several highly publicised incidents of Older drivers failing roadside eye tests. The LAW is that for sub 3.5t you can self certify, over 3.5t (C1) an eye test is mandatory, and the DVLA in their stupidity as usual, thought that this was an easy way to be seen to be doing something?. We all know that arse covering is a way of life with Bureaucrats

Yes, make sure you get the latest D4. I got all mine sorted, medical with D4drivers on 28/6, sent off registered 29, email confirmation from DVLA on 2/7 and new licence arrived 15/7. Apart from “ losing “ 6 weeks off the old licence, it does not run from the end of the last one, can’t really complain

I was 70 during the first week of July and although this Covid-19 hindered to a certain extent I was able to get D4 Drivers to carry out the combined medical and eyesight check in early June.
They would prefer you to turn up with the necessary D2 and D4 forms though they do have a supply if you have difficulties.
I sent the whole lot off and it returned between 3-4 weeks later, last Saturday in fact, a couple of weeks past my 70th birthday.

Good luck

How come D4 Drivers are allowed to do the eye test, but GPs have been stopped and one must go to an optician?
