dometic v thetford , I was just wondering which 3 way fridge was the best

my last MoHo was thetford, my new one is dometic but I haven’t had the chance to use it yet , so was just curious

Had both and both are not fit for purpose.

Only had Dometic but from what I've seen on forums just as many problems with both. There are a lot more Dometics in use so probably makes the the more reliable one.
Both a PITA when they go wrong and rip off spares prices.

my thetford worked ok , not to good when It is 30deg plus , I did your fan mod & got much better results
ive also fitted fans on my new moh’s dometic fridge , although I haven’t had the chance to try it in earnest yet

If I had an option I would prefer to have nothing by Thetford in my Motorhome. I owned a N&B Flair which had a U.K. spec oven and microwave. The oven never worked. Thetford fitted a bank of fans behind it and various other modifications, it still didn’t work when I traded it and Thetfords customer services was shocking. They more or less told me there was nothing more they were prepared to do....shocking.

I also had a Dometic Tech Tower fail 2 months out of warranty in a Burstner. I was assured at the NEC Motorhome show that it was not an issue and would be replaced under warranty. After the show they back tracked and tried all they could to get out of their commitment. It was eventually replaced thanks to the amazing support of Camper U.K. and a family member in the legal profession.

I now have a Siemens compressor fridge and although a little worried when I collected it, it is brilliant. It is night and day from the absorption models and uses less power than I expected, have never heard it run and no ugly grills on the side of my van.

Dometic all day long. When I'm researching these things, I go to E-Bay & type in a search like Caravan fridge spares or repairs.
There are hundreds of Thetford's & just a few Dometic.
Another clue is fridge doors, again, hundreds of Thetford's, very few Dometic.
Now thats not to say that Dometic's never go wrong lol.

ambulancekidd , yeh I do similar searches, I guess we would have to know what % of each have been sold to the market to know if that is relevant, I have seen hundreds of thetford fridges over the years but only seen a few dometic & in very recent times , every caravan I have ever owned or seen has been thetford

I think you are in the minority Thetford only came into the market recently with fridges Dometic (previously branded Electrolux) have dominated the market for over 50 years. By comparison I've hardly seen any Thetford fridges in vans.
I would have though Dometic have around 80% of the market.

The 2004 van we had had a Thetford 3 way absorption fridge/freezer and I think Thetford came to market with fridges for the recreational market when they bought out the US company Norcold around the mid 90's.

you are absolutely right , I got mixed up they were electrolux

Our 3 way Dometic fridge is pretty good.
We use a fridge thermometer and it’s always at 4degC on low/medium low settings.
We only use the thermometer because we had it for an indoor fridge.
It’s handy to have the thermometer to check readiness to load the fridge up for departing from home.

Another vote for Dometic, BUT, don’t expect to be able to get spares abroad. We have had problems in France and Italy, and the local repair guys are good at substituting local hardware, but genuine parts are scarce!
