We are preparing to set off in a few days and expecting cold weather. There are two vent panels on the outside of the MH. The lower one is obviously for the fridge and we have put a winter cover on it. Can someone tell me what the top vent is for and does it also need a winter cover. By its position it looks like it’s to do with the oven, we don’t use the oven as I cannot reach it. I cannot find any mention of a second vent in the Dometic instructions.
In case it makes any difference the MH is a Carthago E Line.
Thanks in advance.

Both vents are for the fridge
You only need to use the bottom cover in very cold or windy occasions
You should never normally need the top cover

The top cover is the fridge exhust, the bottom cover combined with the top cover is for air circulation at the back of the fridge

The oven vent is on the roof. If using the vents best not to leave them on when driving. Only held on by a couple of small clips, expensive if you loose one.

Initially worried me ... re staining the “fur lined” ceiling... along with heat...

But after nearly 3yrs F/T... no issues..

On my Carthago the oven vent was through the roof
There was also heat ventilation above the oven into the van

Alas.. not on mine... cleaned roof only last week (not the first time).. nil vent..

Even looked at install instructions - in early days - and internal venting is ok..

I wonder how long it will be until your ceiling is stained with grease and steam from the oven?

Well can say this....

After nearly 3yrs f/t... and using oven almost daily... zilch!...

As per my earlier post... v. Concerned in early days... but has not proved true..

I’d rather cooking smells and oven heat was vented through the roof rather than left inside the van

That is just help get rid of excessive heat above the oven the roof vent is to vent the combustion gases.

All the vans we have had over the last 10 years have had a grill above the oven it's never been a problem. They have also had a roof vent for the gases.

Looks like Carthago may vent the oven into the hab area now

They have a roof vent as well, if you look at the roof a ss tube goes to the back of the oven completely sealed from the top - I think.

Just remembered my roof vent goes straight into the steel panel on top of the oven.

Yep, cheapscape manufacturers cut corners and don't care about killing the inhabitants with C0.

if you re read what i quoted it was the co risk not the staining problem, which if you read the whole thread doesnt happen
Yes I did read that but it does worry me about the fabric on the roof as it gets very hot and the wood trim in the van expands and pushes away from the cabinet but when it cools it goes back.

I have considered making a heat deflection plate to slot in above the oven when in use.

I was never concerned about Co as we don’t cook while in bed (y)

Re @Fletton's vent.
I know someone with a Carthago fitted a similar vent above the oven to help take the heat out of the space above, despite also having a roof vent.
There were cases of wiring being burnt by the excess heat buildup and after we purchased our van I got the dealers to fit extra insulation above the oven.
On Carthago's there are quite a few cables running through that space and in some cases satellite controllers are fitted there.

Richard.

The cables do get quite warm and soft but within the temperature range of standard pvc insulation - just.
I was checking how hot my cables got with the grill on, forgot about it for 2 hours. Looked at the instructions after "do not use the grill for more than 25 minutes."
