I look forward to discovering a cracking new author, it can take a while.

Let me recommend Joe Abercrombie.
Fantasy novels in the vein of Lord of the Rings and you will need to download a map of the kingdoms.
When a the first chapter of the first book is entitled 'The End' you know its going to be different.

Highly recommended - Have look ---- https://joeabercrombie.com/books/

I do lean toward historical novels and having read almost all of Bernard Cornwell books I have now newly discovered Simon Scarrow.
A series of four novels tracing the whole life history of Napoleon and Wellington.

Has anyone else read Edward Marston books? I have read some of the Victorian/Edwardian detective series but he also wrote war and train whodunnits from different periods.

As I said I've recently discovered him.

Glokta is my favourite an awesome character

Typically saying one thing, while constantly thinking another.

  • Sand dan Glokta, a dashing young swordsman before his capture and years of torture by the Gurkish. Now crippled, he has become a torturer himself in the Union's Inquisition.

Stealaway if you like Simon Scarrow I can highly recommend his Cato and Macro series of books about the Roman Legions. I found them highly addictive

I get a daily email from Bookbub with suggestions - you can set your preferences. Have discovered a few "new" authors, a lot of them mediocre but a couple of crackers. Occasionally they offer free downloads too.

It's connected to Amazon/Kindle

I've heard good things about James Islington and his Licanius (?) Trilogy, but I haven't read his work yet.

An excellent read (all of them) but I fear there won't be any more as he hasn't been well for a while now.
