Dilution on MHFun to informed answers to questions.

No, I post them :D. They are not deleted. You should see the rude messages I get if I forget someone:Eeek:
I forgot to put my birthday on my profile so missed out this year! … :shake:

This thread has raised a quite significant issue!
There are some days where there are no birthday messages.:(
Funsters, we need to be filling in the blanks.(y)
It's my only excuse to the other half for having a drink that night.
So, let's get with the plan!(y)

Guess I'll need to update my profile, as well!:whistle2:

Lots cannot do that. They put a Dot (.) on a blank page.
I often do that when I have made a mistake in trying to post to a comment.
Is this wrong?
I did/do it as its the only way I know of getting out of a mess and starting again with my attempted response to whoever or whatever.
Not trying to hide anything.

You are correct, but a lot of newbies come on here looking for technical help.

If MHFun is not for exchange of technical data about MHs which forum is?

Geoff
It’s not just newbies who ask for technical help. I sometimes ask for technical help but I rarely understand the answer especially if it’s to do with electrickery but that’s my fault and not the person doing the explaining. Nick and I just pay a man (or woman) who can now.

If you you can simply cut and paste paste/cut any reply and it vanishes as long as you haven’t hit Post

nicholsong Geoff i raised a similar concern with Jim a few years ago.
I think the majority of subscribers to fun are up for a bit of frivolity which can imho swamp the posts and drowned out nugget of information.
The concern I expressed was how quickly things that I might be interested in moved down the list on What's New to be replaced by what I considered trivia.

To overcome this I was very selective about which sections of the forums I ignored. You only have to do it once and the things you don't want to see are gone forever as far as you are concerned.
Of course that approach does not take into account posts that are put in the wrong categories but what you don't know about you can't worry about.

I am sorry, but cut and paste to me is a technique used in decorating.
I am only just used to a metric system, but I am getting there inch by inch!

There’s some miserable gits on here, happy birthday all for those with birthdays in the rest of this year and for those that are missing their technical posts why not try searching for what your interested in, it’s a very good search facility on here, just don’t search for “anally retentive Funster” you might get upset ;)

Why on earth anyone would advertise their true birth date on the internet and risk having their ID cloned?

A scam bank account application (for example) requires very little personal information, and a DoB is a key part of it.

I have been prolific on forums since.....(thinking) 2002 ish - maybe earlier. I started when I bought my first VX220 and used Lotus forums Pistonheads and VX220 forums. Lost count of the number of places on the internet that have my genuine details and I exclusivly bank on the internet with many accounts.

In 20 years I've not had a security issue. I don't think it is an issue generally unless you are careless.

But the good thing about this forum is it is split into sections. There is loads of technical stuff on all kinds of areas.

Click on the 3 lines top left, click forums and choose which bit you want to go to relevant to the topic i.e. Solar panels, toilets etc etc.

If you want to find posts easily on a subject use the search box top right.

Once you have posted you can click the edit button and make changes. I do it all the time.

I only ever look at the first page and use search if I am after an answer to a particular question. Life's too short to start scrolling through the huge amount of content there is on this forum . . .

+1 for me too with that

I had exactly the same problem and I couldn't see any way to delete it either!

Hhmm

another case of yes and no!

One of the key details in certain types of fraud is DoB so I never give that info or if pressed for it by some sites give a day or four either side just paranoid i guess

I have noted the increase of new members, whether paid up or not. This in itself is not a problem and no doubt Jim welcomes them.

It does however dilute the percentage of experienced members.

Those experienced members are still there.

The problem I see is that serious technical questions are being pushed down the pages because of the 'Newbies' posts, plus the 'Happy Birthday' posts. Therefore it is becoming increasingly difficult to find answers to questions, without trawling through many pages.

The original OP on a question has the option to 'Bump' it but that adds to posts on a page, partially compounding the problem.

I feel that Jim is partly aware of the problem, since he recently increased the number of posts per page.

I cannot offer much solution to this other than to cut the 'Happy Birthday' posts as a start.
Everybody was a new member at some time and not all new members are inexperienced.

Never! In your privacy tab you tell me to keep your birth day and month secret, so I can't wish you a happy birthday no matter how much I want to :D

You need to go here. Broken Link Removed

And place a tick in this box, we don't need to know the year. (y)

Sorry Jim, didn't know about the ticky boxes. assumed because my DOB was listed that that would be it. I'll not tick the box anyway as I know you love me without having to remind me each year.

Sorry Jim, didn't know about the ticky boxes. assumed because my DOB was listed that that would be it.

No the DOB is private via default when you join us. It might not have always been like that, 15 years or so ago, but these days it's right that it is. It would be out of order to let everyone know your birthday without your permission (y)
