Since we have moved to Northumberland, the option of taking the ferry to Amsterdam from Newcastle, instead of taking the tunnel, for when we decide to travel to Europe again. Has anyone else use this route and would they recommend it. Also if you took a dog are they allowed in the cabin . Thanks for any information.

Yes, did it on our first trip. Easy enough with animals, we had a parrot with us! Not sure about dogs in cabins?
We generally prefer the tunnel and treat the UK journey as part of the trip but we have never been in a hurry or time limited.
Costs are similar last time I checked by the time you add in diesel.

We did it a few years ago and were not allowed to take my dog into the cabin. It was only £7 to have him in a crate and he was the only dog in there which was good.

The P&O from hull to Rotterdam, has dog freindly cabins, about £20 per pet I think.
Was a good ship, and plenty to do see and restaurants galore.

I caught the 'party boat' from Newcastle to Amsterdam and back in 2018. The whole experience was on the whole - very good. There was a cabaret show and the food was pretty good. I have heard that the cops have been known to be waiting with the breathalysers in Amsterdam, but they weren't there when I was going through.

I was talking to a couple who had a dog and they told me that there is one of the ferry's which have a sort of sandpit which a few cabins can use for dogs to have a bit of relief.

We use it regularly in normal times
Book as early as you can as cost jumps a lot if you want on at short notice
Food is fine
The upgraded cabins are much nicer though I'm sleeping in a tin can once on holiday anyway
As long as you remember they are car ferry's and not cruise ships it beats the drive south

We used the crossing to reach Stockholm by train for a Baltic Cruise. I had difficulty adjusting to the strange sexual restraint policies aboard DFDS Ferries though ...

Nice ferry, probably the most expensive I have ever used. `Including the Norway ones back in the day.
We find it balances out re less driving and loss of holiday time when we were still working but agree it's not a cheep option at peak times
Hoping to cross later in the summer if we are allowed
One of the benefits I like as it's overnight I'm not driving on both sides of the road on the same day
Road access to motorways on both sides is easy as well

That’s important for people working like us, it’s about 40 miles to the ferry terminal from home and then the next morning you arrive in Holland, not far from Delph etc

A full day at least to get to Dover, in fact we have usually done it in 2 days then the same to get back that’s 3 to 4 days out of your holiday not to mention the driving.

Agreed

A few years back we did the Hull to Zeebrugge mini cruise and day in Bruges

Comes highly recommended , drop the car at hull on the boat late afternoon , sail all night , arrive 8am , coach to Bruges. ,all day drinking Belgian beer and looking at stuff then repeat for the return journey

Casino , bars , caboret , restaurants , we opted for meals both ends , food was great

As far as I see it , it all depends on you destination.
If you are going north, great.
If you are going south west, then why?
From Lockerbie we drive to Dover in a day.
Stay on either side of the channel, get up and travel on.
Usually for around £70/80 crossings.

As Jays2 says depends where you plan to end up
We tend to point towards Germany and the Alps
Not much/ any benefit if you are Spain bound

We have used it several times heading to Scandinavia, Poland and Berlin and always had a good crossing. Our favourite crossing is Hull to Zeebrugge which I believe has stopped taking passengers, we just prefer to drive a couple of hours then relax rather than drive to Dover. The good think about this route is if you where heading to the Med area around Nice it’s not much further than Calais, this year we are booked Hull to Rotterdam and I reckon it’s costing us less than £100 more than Dover/Tunnel would.

Yes, we have used it a good few times over the years. Used it to take our old van back to Germany and the new one home last December.
The ship is nice and upgrade to the Commodore Plus Cabin for a great experience. The ship can be rowdy on weekend departures and they actually have “bouncers” patrolling the ship.
Another thing to point out, but sure it would have no impact on any responsible funster, but it is common for the Dutch Police to be standing at the other side of the passport control booth and EVERY driver is breath tested before being allowed to enter. Not sure what happens if you fail, but been tested on our last 8 crossing.
Book early for best price. Ferry is not taking passengers at the moment but still sailing, I assume doing freight. I watched it depart and arrive last week whilst parked up at a THS at Seaburn.

I think I was on the same one:giggle::giggle:. Fri afternoon mid summer. Plenty of stags and hens all enjoying themselves. Singer of sorts on the top deck as we were leaving and bands playing later on. An enjoyable trip but expensive trip overall.

From Northumberland we have done them all. Least favourite is Newcastle-Amsterdam. Expensive and you land too far up if you are going South.
Hull-Zeebrugge or Rotterdam is quite a nice one but, still a bit expensive. Get a nice rest and a meal and a few beers and, you don't have to set off early in the morning to get it.
Bar far the most flexible and cost-effective is the tunnel. We try to get away just after 9am and usually cross about 5pm-6pm. Put a couple of hours in off the other end to get away from the port then hole-up in an aire.
This is just our opinion though.
Safe and safe happy travels. 👍

The only issue I can see for us would be they can't promise gluten-free food :(

We could take a picnic in a cool box of course.

I have been breathalyzed at Rotterdam when travelling to Dusseldorf Drupa print exhibition. One of the truck drivers with all the stand fittings etc on was over the limit and made to stay in the compound until he blew clear. He eventually arrived 8 hours late his boss was not amused.
