Department of Transport ruling on minibus tyres (1 Viewer)

Good afternoon,
After talking to my mechanic pal hetold that the Department of Transport together with Baroness Vere of Norbiton published a ruling regarding tyres over 10 years old. This was placed onto the Dept of Transport website on 15.07.20 . It's worth having a look because it makes our fraternity more aware of tyres which look OK but are potentially lethal.

I personally wouldn’t entertain tyres that were anywhere near to 10 years old on any vehicle.
I had several TVR’s over the years, and when you went to shows, there would always be some very nice cars that had only done a couple of thousand miles each year, if that, and had old tyres on, as they still had plenty of tread on. We use to call them Ditch finders!
Very expensive cars and people skimp on the very thing that keeps you on the road, or Not!

I purchased a 2002 Fiesta , one owner 30,000 miles but it was still on the original tyres , passed every MOT , no advisories, obviously MOT centres not too concerned about age of tyres.
Perhaps it something that should be reviewed.

Why would they be concerned ? They perform an mot according to the rules set down not to make it up to suit.

We sold a ford fiesta that belonged to my father in law.it was a 1999 year reg .it had 3500 miles on the clock .that was around 5 years ago.it belongs to a neighbour now who said he had taken it for an MOT and passed.but the tester advised him that the tyres were 21 years old he thanked him and said that he had reminded him to buy a birthday card .I think the car has done another 2000 odd miles since we sold it.

I don't think it is aimed at motorhomes particularly or at all actually but it's a timely reminder that old tyres are possibly not the best idea especially on the steering axle.

My local repair shop now refuse to fit a tyre over 5 years old. I think it was poor planning the government didn't include MH in the ruling for minibuses and coaches etc....

They have covered vehicles conveying passengers.

If they include Motorhome’s they would have to include all vehicles.

Im not saying that’s a bad thing either.

If all tyres had to be replaced at 5 years old how earth much money would that cost. Plus the amount of old tyres to get rid of. Prices and wages would have to go up so people could afford it

How many people use tyre covers when their van is not in use? It protects them from the UV which is what ages the rubber. With care and regular inspection, one could perhaps get 7 years before prudence would dictate replacement.
