Not a motorhome question. We are in our French house where the water is full of calcium and this builds up on taps and the toilets very quickly. We have a fosse septic so can’t use most toilet chemicals. My question is can I safely use citric acid ro descale the toilets, kettles etc without damaging the septic tank? If not, are there safe products which will achieve the same thing? White vinegar is fine for the kettle but hasn’t worked too well on the hard scale formed in the toilet.
Thanks.

Distilled Vinegar have used for many years in my Septic tank, also use it for laundry.

Is distilled vinegar the same as white vinegar?

Yes white vinegar is the distilled variety, brown vinegar is malted.
White vinegar is safe to use in a septic tank as it’s natural

An occasional dead animal/road kill into the septic tank will enhance the bacteria count to improve its efficiency
Try getting an ex-sanglier into the tank! 😂

I don't think citric acid will do it any harm. The amount you will use even for the toilet(s) will be massively diluted once it reaches the tank.

I've killed our septic tank when I forgot I had added a chemical to the MH cassette to give it a good clean and then tipped it down the house toilet. The tank was smelly for a week or so but it recovered although I did buy some tablets online which were designed to inoculate septic tanks with a starter mixture of bacteria. The lesson from this is tanks will recover. :)

I seem to recall, and will check next time we venture into town, that citric acid food grade is easily available in supermarkets at quite low prices. Or it was last time we were here in the summer. Everything is more expensive now.

We use food grade Citic acid for all our descaling and our tank is quite healthy (y)

Amazon product ASIN B01KNQ2CRY
Approximate quantities of citric acid please and do you dilute it first and, if so, at what ratio to water?

We use as little as possible, start with just a tablespoon or two, you'll need to experiment, warm water you can use a little less. We are in a very hard water area, so kettles and coffee machines are descaled weekly.
