Data abroad driving me mad

Ah well I've signed up for the unlimited plan and put my Smarty sim on hold as its only 12gb in the EU
hoping it works for the 6 weeks we are away in Germany and Austria or my better half will not be best pleased as she
likes her Corrie and Emmerdale
Austria might not be included.

Austria might not be included.
It will be, when we go abroad we just get a welcome txt on entering every country we visit, all the way to Croatia and back it never failed in any country!!
I had the sim and WiFi system in 5 yrs ago and tbh if it mucks up I’m stuffed cos I don’t know the first thing about it, it really has been a fit and forget WiFi system and works seamlessly👍

I've still got an EE sim with 200GB in Europe
Can I ask how you got that? I have two EE fullworks sims which have free roaming, but there is a fair usage limit of 50gb/month even though they are both unlimited in the UK, as fast as is Available contracts.

ID Mobile is 30Gb abroad, not unlimited.
I never said it was unlimited. 🤷

I do wish folks would read posts properly before commenting.

With 70Gb sounds like you may've upgraded....
No, that was my original contract allowance pre June 2023. As you will observe from the following quoted post, things have changed recently.

Lorr has a newer contract which was limited. In September 24 ID changed the T&Cs for a temporary period so that new contracts have same as at home, this is still in place but obviously could stop tomorrow.
(y)

You might want to tell them they are wrong then…..

Edit….just been onto their online chat (bot) and it confirms 30gb allowance.………however, looking at their fair use policy, it’s very confusing! One part says 30gb and one part says amount within your allowance which could be unlimited!! So confusing especially when their chatbot says 30gb!
Left leg isn’t talking to right leg….
Tell you what, why don't you tell them they've got it wrong.....................whilst most of us id Mobile customers know that they've got it right. 🤷
I'm usually the first to put my hand up if I get it wrong............but not on this occasion. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Have you rang them and double checked that?, we did yesterday and was assured with our roaming pass we can use our full plan whilst in the EU, only subject to a 50GB a day limit.

I have a motorhome wifi 5g system fitted it’s great if you stop in one country for a while but if you travel about Europe you have to buy a local sim every time and I am finding this a little frustrating especially if you stop somewhere now where near a town to get one. So my question is there a data only sim that works all over Europe or would a starlink system be the answer . I am pretty ignorant on all this technology so any help would be greatly appreciated.
We are retired now but have kept one O2 business sim only which we use in our maxview roam router, the benefit of business sim is you can use all your data in Europe no cap.
Plus unused rolls over.
Info may be of interest to people that have business sims but didn’t know this fact

Funny you should mention a business sim I was talking to my neighbour on the campsite in Portugal who couldn’t understand why I was struggling with data when travelling , turns out he had a o2 account same as me but his was a business account . He could use it all over Europe no problem no caps, I wonder how much it costs to set up fictitious business and apply for a business phone 😜

Tescomobile gives us unlimited roaming data throughout UK & EU for £18.50/month. We typically use around 200Gb on a month's tour
Same here. I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t have Tesco Mobile with unlimited data roaming at home and in EU. We have a family plan, £30 for first sim then £10 for each additional one, so we have one each and one for the MiFi and costs us £50 per month on a rolling contract. Works on O2 network in UK. Great service. Every year it goes up by the rate of inflation but you can just go into Tesco Mobile shop and they will reduce the price again for you.

would they post out sim cards to the UK
Yes they do. Postage is 15€ which is just added to your account. The beauty of it is that you can pause it between uses for about 4€ a month. You just email Camino when you want to start/pause it.
Camino is very helpful, drop her an email with any questions you have and she will answer them fully before you commit.

Popit mobile sim the router and Orange Travel esim in the iPad works well for me.

I’ve now got Starlink (best) but we used to have e-SIMS. Airolo, I think. What we liked was how each e-SIM rests in your phone and you can go back to it again if required.

No I haven't rung them, but judging by the forums it seems customer service say one thing but t&c say another, i'd be interested to hear from anyone who has the same fullworks contract that has used more than 50gb in a month and not been charged. Did you pay extra for your roaming pass or was it included in your contract?

We have Tesco unlimited data sim. We got it for £17.5 per month at the time and it has been pretty faultless in the following countries when roaming:
France, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Norway.

They use the O2 network when in the UK.
Beware they might restrict the roaming to your average use in the UK over the proceeding 90 days, although we have been ok to date.

Hi Mike….
Can I ask what made you switch to Starlink?
We are going to Europe soon for 2 months.
I bought a Starlink mini……but it’s expensive at near £100 a month for unlimited. I haven’t activated it yet.

Was considering getting an uncapped eSIM instead……

We will mostly use it for watching the firestick on quiet evenings or bad weather periods…..

I use a Netgear Nighthawk M3 mobile router. For UK data I use an EE SIM from Scancom with unlimited data. Good value and works well but it's UK only, no European roaming. It is also about to expire so I am on the hunt for a new SIM that I can use both in the UK and in Europe.

Option 1 - as a current EE customer for mobile and home broadband, I can get a discounted additional data only SIM from EE. Unlimited data in UK and 50GB data per month for EU roaming is usually £39 / month but with my customer discount would be £19 per month (rolling monthly contract so I could change anytime). Speed is capped at 100mbps which is good enough I think.

Option 2 - Tesco Mobile 12 month contract SIM at £23 / month - unlimited data in UK and currently EU roaming too although that could end anytime. Tesco use O2 however which in my experience is not so good coverage wise in the UK vs EE. Also, there terms seem to state that their SIM cards do not work or should not be used in mobile routers, only phones. Confusing.

Option 3 - ID Mobile SIM only on rolling monthly contract is between £15-18 / month - unlimited data in UK and 30GB limit in Europe, although for some this seems to be unlimited too. Uses the Three network in UK which I've found OK previously.

Option 4 - Starlink Roam - £50 / month for 100GB / month. A bit pricey and as others have said I reckon satellite broadband will be a better option when other competitors arrive on the scene.

For now, I'm thinking Option 1 is the best bet for me as I could use it in my existing Netgear M3 and as I already have 50GB roaming data on my EE phone plan which I can also use, I would in fact have 100GB per month if I go with their additional SIM.

It's a minefield out there though, so if anyone has any suggestions or advice to steer me in a particular direction, I'd appreciate it.

Next one into the frey coming soon might be worthwhile.
Just to add to your confusion 😕.

At least one mifi device is listed in their supported devices list, but routers are not supposed to be supported although some do work.

EE is 50GB per month EU roaming, not 50GB per day. And that's on their top SIM plan - "Full Works" - which I currently have on my iPhone. I think whoever at EE advised you on the phone was telling porkies or made a simple mistake - I've had EE staff tell me all sorts of nonsense before and then totally deny it later. Their network is good but their customer service is not the best in my experience. Anyway, I'd recommend you check again to avoid going over 50GB in a month when in Europe and then getting charged the earth for the privilege.

I've been using an unlimited data (and calls/texts) SIM from ID Mobile for the last couple of years. £17/month all in. Sign up via the link below and we both get up to £35 welcom gift!

I use an eSIM capable router which can store up to 8 different profiles. Easy to get hold of regional (EU plus UK) sim. On recent trip had a single eSim which worked in UK, Holland, Germany & Austria without a glitch

Just rang them again and the person yesterday was indeed talking crap, it is 50GB a month but even the chap today said don’t worry if you go over you won’t get charged.

Another vote for Starlink, we are 3 years in and wouldn’t be without it. Currently back home and have it in the garden as we cancelled the home broadband as we are never at home.

30gb is hardly fair usage, could use that in a day.
That is the EU cap when roaming.
You'll be pleased to know that there used to be a formula for it .
Twice what you paid + 1 with a maximum of 23gb
That was until ,july 2024 when they changed it to 30gb/month even if you have unlimited . Any plan that is under 30gb/month you get the full wack when roaming
Every year it goes up by the rate of inflation
In the UK. & you have to ask why?
would they post out sim cards to the UK
yes
but even the chap today said don’t worry if you go over you won’t get charged.
:laughing:hope you recorded the call.
