Data abroad driving me mad

Last time I looked at eSIM adapters you needed an Android phone in order to activate them. Not sure if that's still the case?

We have two ID unlimited data sims, mine is on the old contract so I have unlimited for roaming, Lorr has a newer contract which was limited. In September 24 ID changed the T&Cs for a temporary period so that new contracts have same as at home, this is still in place but obviously could stop tomorrow.
I pay £18 and Lor pays £17 pcm

ID mobile currently allow up to 30gb roaming per month depending on your contract.

Sorry but that’s not correct, as of 1/10/24 they did as I said and allow full usage while roaming, this was a temporary measure and can be removed at anytime. We have been on 3 trips of over 60 days since and Lorr has used far more than 30gb per month.

They don’t make it easy to find but it’s on their website, or just use chat and ask.

Here is what Google AO says about it.

You might want to tell them they are wrong then…..

Edit….just been onto their online chat (bot) and it confirms 30gb allowance.………however, looking at their fair use policy, it’s very confusing! One part says 30gb and one part says amount within your allowance which could be unlimited!! So confusing especially when their chatbot says 30gb!
Left leg isn’t talking to right leg….

Orange travel for me, seems to cover all eu plus a few others. Works in my teltonika router via an esim adaptor. No speed issues.

They do on some, but not on others.

Mine is old enough that it wasn't an option at the time, but I believe most (if not all) of the new Teltonika range is eSIM compatible now.

I'm sure other manufacturers will start making this standard soon too, same as phones have been doing.
I specifically ordered a RUTX11 part number RUTX11240300 which has the eSIM capability built in as there are several different versions available. Installed it last week in the van and tested it with an eSIM from orange and it worked but not with the default APN. Orange do various eSIMs topping out on 500GB for 90 days(€100) covering all of europe or a more conveniant 20GB for14 days(€25). A bit more expensive but allows for a lot of countries without any mucking about. Orange link. Roll on my 6 week test this summer!!

No need to tell them they are wrong because they tell you on their website it changed in October 24, MichaelT posted a screenshot and here’s another from their website.

I’ll keep using it like this until further notice, it’s worked so far for 3 trips with no issues and if you keep using yours to 30gb you’ll be fine.

I have some 90 day orange esims. You have to register them if you want to go beyond 30 days. I did this with the esim in an adapter in my phone first then transfered it to my teltonoka. I have the rutx50.

Tesco mobile unlimited gives all your data for two months in every four, although myself and others have had no issues with a three month trip, I was averaging 500gb/month on my last trip, you need to manually set the APN to the Tesco specific one, also it may not work in a router as it's intended for mobile devices but definitely works in Huawei mifi devices and I believe it works in ZTE MU5001's as well.

Just get Starlink and be done with it.
Or hold fire for a bit and see what Amazon Leo will look like by the end of the year and AST SpaceMobile maybe a year or so after that.

Once Starlink starts having some competition I think we'll see some more sensible price plans coming out.

Leo's beta seems to have an even more mini version than the Starlink Mini which could be really interesting for us van dwellers....

I'm keeping my powder dry on satellite internet tech for the moment.

Completely agree with this point. The alternatives to Starlink in a few years will massively lower the price. In addition Satellite coverage is rumoured to be included in certain UK mobile price plans via the next gen pple handsets -> which could again lower the price of roaming if you can just use the Satellite coverage on a handset (at moment it's text coverage only really).

For us, yes multiple sims is a faff if you travelling following the weather as we have done before (ended up in Belgium weeks before planned due to this last year).

However if you mostly plan to stick to France or Spain local sims are cheaper in almost all cases. We are. now very familar with changing APN codes, and have them printed out for the majority of sims we use (Lobster/Digi for Spain, Reglo and Lebara for France). We carry with us a UK Three sim with roaming enabled for the period whilst we look for the next sim so we never without data (but these days we mostly use the generous 36Gb Reglo roaming allowance on the French sim until we done). We also have preprogramed our router for the common sims we use, and just chooose the sim name from dropdown and set as default as we swap it.

For us, the issue is moot, if you enabled 5g on say a MU5001 you are using 2-3x the Amps that you are on 4g (not an issue in summer). But even then a Starlink mini is again triple-4x a MU5001 on 5g. Fine if you have lots of sun and battery. Not so useful in Winter when you sipping amps.

For me the above point is nothing to do with Musk, it's just about flexibility.

Personally I'm not a fan as mentioned on here before of eSims which are not native to the country you are in (A say French esim provider in France is FINE however, so an Orange France one in France is acceptable). Many of the big providers (mentioning no names -> but the ones Youtubers/influenders shill are known to do this) actually end up being Polish or Lithiuanian "exit" points, as these are the cheapest place to buy data, but with the bandwith delay product (basically how your phone responds to packet loss) being bad for those the further you are from Poland or the exit points, they are limited to around 10-20Mbit a second in places far from those countries like the USA. (which is far worse than a native US sim).

Thank you for reminding me - I did see that mentioned somewhere and completely forgot. Hope it won't be a challenge as I did see Orange saying you can only register the eSIM against one piece of hardware. On the big plus side I now have two SSIDs in my van. One is straight out to the internet and the other is on a permanent VPN back into my house using Wireguard which appears to be rock solid so far. I moved from a 10year old Draytek to a Ubiquiti UCG costing 1/3 the replacement cost and I'm wowed by both the UCG and the RUTX11.

I've got Tesco as well and it's currently working in an Avtex router. I'll find out how we get on in France next month. I've still got an EE sim with 200GB in Europe. I will probably drop this once the Tesco sim proves reliable.

Just make sure it's using the Tesco APN before you travel abroad, I had one occasion with a new device where it defaulted to an O2 APN which did work but not reliably.

It is a bit confusing as that’s their T&Cs and they probably won’t change them for a promotion, the promotion shown in my screenshot is top of their page and tells you it’s roam like home.

Sat in Mons, Belgium watching Coronation Street on the smart telly, through YouTube using my phone as a hot spot with our unlimited free roaming pass from EE.
No idea how we got unlimited roaming but we’ve checked with EE several times and have texts confirming we can use our full plan.
The router is switched off as the sim in that doesn’t have roaming.

Ah yes my bad, but in my experience the OP never knows what he wants🤷‍♂️🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣 and when he finds out what he wants he doesn’t want to pay for it🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤣🤣🤣
You are right in not knowing what I want because I don’t understand the technology but to say I don’t want to pay for it is a bit of the kettle calling the pot black 😂😂😂

Ah well I've signed up for the unlimited plan and put my Smarty sim on hold as its only 12gb in the EU
hoping it works for the 6 weeks we are away in Germany and Austria or my better half will not be best pleased as she
likes her Corrie and Emmerdale
