We are putting in some forward planning into our Germany/Switerland/Austria trip in June.
Going Hull - Rotterdam, was thinking of first stop being Cologne. I see there is a stellplaz near the zoo. Has anyone stayed there, any tips etc?
Thanks

We went to Christmas markets in November 21 here is my review.

Great location 35 minute walk to Cathedral along river. Visited 4 Christmas Market within easy stroll of centre. Busy cycle path right outside which we overlooked as we got a river view pitch.

We haven't been yet but have booked to go at the end of the month, you can reserve a space, but last year when we were going to go we left it too late and all the reserved spaces were....reserved!
I think it's only half the site so you'll probably be ok but we wanted to be sure of a space.
Looks very convenient for the City though.

When we were there it was very busy with the warden(no english) rushing about trying to squeeze everybody in. Very helpful as far as language barrier would allow. Think it was cash only.
Train station just across the other side of main road frequent service to centre.

We’ve stayed several times. Tram station outside the entrance takes you right into the city. It’s on the banks of the Rhine, not particularly scenic but perfectly adequate for the purpose of a city visit.

You can use the toilets at the youth hostel by the entrance (or you used to be able to).

It gets busy, so I’d turn up mid to late morning, and it goes without saying that midweek is quieter than at the weekend. I’ve never booked and always got a space.

we turned up in March and it was full... the weather had changed to a glorious weekend and everyone was out.
we styayed at a site further down the river, about a 10 min cycle in to the centre along glorious cycle path. More expensive yes, but the stress of being able to book something lessens the stress.

Cologne is a lovely city, brilliant to explore by bike. The cathedral is stunning.

Thanks, I will look into booking

As others have mentioned there is a tram stop outside (No.18) or the riverside cycle path follows the Rhine all the way to the city. Not stayed on the Stellplatz but we used to live in Cologne. The city is quite compact for a major city and easily walkable, relatively flat and has great public transport/cycle systems. They also still have a Woolworths! Have I sold it enough yet?!

If you really want to see Köln, then definitely go that way, the traffic around Köln, Dusseldorf etc can be horrendous though, if you are going south then Belgium into Luxembourg, (cheaper diesel) then Karlsruhe and on southwards is nicer IMO.

Cologne - I was going to recommend ‘old faithful’ Brut 33. You splash it all over! Be careful around the delicate parts though!!! 🤪
