Chausson Welcome 85
Exp
Since 2018
I have a Chausson Welcome 85 with a 'mock' wooden block floor.
This is fine but I would like to fit carpets.
The van came with fitted carpets of the black short fibre kind with a non slip rubber back.
This has two huge problems:-
It picks up dirt like there's no tomorrow.
It curls up some thing rotten and renders them unusable.

I know some Funsters etc. have used Flotex.
Could some body let me know if this was successful please ?

Did it stay flat?
Do the edges have to be 'bound' after cutting?
Does it absorb moisture?
Does it mark the surface it's laid on?

Thank you

Not got Flotex in our motorhome but was in the flooring trade way back when!
Flotex is loose lay so -
  • Yes, it stays flat (it actually moulds itself to any imperfections in the floor so has to be laid on a good flat surface).
  • No, edges do not have to be bound.
  • No, it's waterproof.
  • Maybe, if laying on vinyl the "dotted indents" on the back may leave a pattern on the surface of the vinyl which may, or may not, disappear after time when uncovered.

Yes, we’ve had it in the past. Used an off cut to make it reasonable cost. However, we’ve since changes to the cotton mats that can be thrown in the wash and tumble dried. Again only buy when on sale. Our van carpets were cream/light beige and are still in plastic in the attic.

And when the van goes to the breakers, the carpets may never have been used.

Never understood the logic of this.... Pay for the motorhome with vastly inflated prices, and then keep the good bits for other's to benefit from.

As maybe bertiebasset, I just think cream carpet with two dogs and a hubby who refuses to remove shoes is a no go. Being able to throw these turtle mats in the washer regular is my preference

Got rid of the carpet and bought marvel mats from Dunelm. Cut to shape very easily, come in various sizes and throw in the washer. They do leak fluff at first so best to wash them early, but great for dirt trapping and dry quickly. With outdoor shoes and having a dog I wouldn't be without. Theyre also made of recycled materials.

Search for Gel carpet on Google or Amazon. Rubber backed, easy to cut with a Stanley knife and cut does not fray so no need to bind edges. Lasts well and can be cleaned with a hose or power washer.

The carpets on our Hymer were poor quality so we bought enough to replace them for about £60. We used the existing carpets as a template, but you can just make paper templates. We take them up quite often to get to storage boxes underneath and they lay flat under their own weight.

Please as worked in carpets for 30years some gel backed are loop pile they will fray binding is the best way we also used metal poppers on the carpet and fixed to the floor Flotex is very good but the patterns ???

Ours is not loop pile. Each very fine strand is embedded in the gel backing at one end only.. We have had ours down for nearly 4 years and it has not frayed at all at the edges and they have not curled up.

I've just had Flotex fitted to our Hymer B544, total cost incl fitting was £150, a bargain when you consider Hymer prices.
Te carpet fitter was able to fit it like laying lino, so it fits like a glove and doesn't move at all, the idea was to get rid of the yellow Hymer carpet for something easier to keep clean as we have a Pointer. I tried a piece of Flotex and washed it with the power washer on the drive, which was successful.
We are off for 6/7 weeks on Saturday so hoping the flotex is good. The only problem is the floor hatches, we had to cut the Flotex into 4 pieces.

Bought a good quality carpet off-cut, used original thin carpets as pattern, got new bit bound. That was nearly 5 yrs ago and they still look good after a dog & constant use!
