Cancellation by the Hymer Group for all autumn trade fairs

I read earlier today that the Caravan Salon at Dusseldorf was going to be a week later in September this year. If it does go ahead it’s not going to have much on show if other companies follow Hymer’s lead.

And for those that don't read German see below, and as somebody else says that already a big hole in the Dusseldorf show and no doubt others will follow, Stuttgart could be the one in 2021 if anybody is itching to spend money.

Bad Waldsee, May 8, 2020 - The Erwin Hymer Group and its brands Bürstner, Carado, Crosscamp, Dethleffs, Eriba, Etrusco, Hymer, Niesmann + Bischoff, Laika, LMC and Sunlight are canceling their participation in all trade fairs planned for 2020 in Europe . In view of the high number of visitors to trade fairs such as the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf and the measures that are necessary due to the risk of infection from the Corona virus, trade fair appearances are not sensible this year.

Its says its the whole group so dusseldorf is going to be very quiet - if it happens funflair

Well, if anyone wants to get there hands on a quality Hymer and can’t wait...?

I think it goes beyond the risk of Covid, the cost to the group are phenomenal running into hundreds of thousands and I doubt they would have any chance of recouping these costs in view of an uncertain future.
Sadly,I doubt many of these brands will survive and though the group may survive it will be much more condensed.

I can see the basis of your remarks, but unlike the UK the German motorhome factories after some short early holidays are back producing AND delivering albeit in a controlled way, the large motorhome dealers have been receiving new stock, look at mobile.de and click newest ads filter to see how many new ones listed within the last weeks. Not that I am suggesting that all is rosy but neither is it all doom and gloom!

It’s a fine line I guess, if you want to sell vans you need to be at the biggest show, yes it costs a lot of money but if you are not there and the competition is who will pick up the sales.

A sensible move by Hymer. A large percentage of people of an age to buy a Hymer are not going to be going to busy public places this year at least.

Quality Leisure Vehicles always sell well. Maybe there will be an upsurge in demand for Motorhomes soon as flights are currently scarce due to the Covid Pandemic and the lock down ?

Let’s hope so,however, the Dealers receiving stock are for commitments made many months ago the concept of shows is to bring in new business along with showboating with a strong brand and market place both of which will have to face the test of time.
Manufacturing on the scale of the Hymer group will take some financing if they can’t move stock and probably unstubstainable

It all depends on the market for Motorhomes IMO. We ve all had a big wake up call, the main message of which is avoid crowded places. There are a lot of people who spend serious money on their holidays and who will be emerging in due course contemplating their futures and looking for alternatives to sitting on planes or cruise ships. A self contained MH could be a very attractive option for many of them.

I don't want to be argumentative but perhaps I did not make my points clear. German motorhome factories are manufacturing. Dealers are receiving deliveries, I accept they will have made these orders even as much as a year ago, but the dealers have to pay for the van before it leaves the factory, and customers are getting handovers so cashflow is still..... flowing. Your inference is that demand has simply gone away overnight and that new orders will not be filtering through and that over the months the flood will not resume and you may well be right, but I am not concurring with that thought. However I would agree that manufacturers use this opportunity to reset their marketing strategies if they believe that for some time they have been exhibiting for no real benefit. Do all these "exhibition orders" really magic from impetuous purchases by the exhibition visitors. An excellent opportunity to test without loss of face. I may be wrong but I am a glass half full kind of a guy, together perhaps we make a pint?

I think that's a fair point Jon, I don't know how our personal circumstances will have changed post lockdown but my guess is "not a lot" so on that basis if we were not committed already we would still be looking for a new motorhome, others may well be in a different position of course but I think there are too many unknown factors to guess and lets face it the English are a very small minority at the Dusseldorf show.

Agreed but the cost of a MH from most of the brands in this particular group is significantly more than a Cruise or Flight holiday, a major purchase for anyone starting out as a Motor-homer.
I have said they will survive but as with most businesses surviving this Pandemic their strategy and business model will more than likely change.

I know you are aware that the Dealers of these brands are on the stands at these shows and write orders at extreme values therefore it’s quite believable that the order value at Düsseldorf would run into many €millions ,l have personall purchased there spending £200+ on a MH so it is a significant amount of business that they normally take.
They would be desperate to attend if this business was likely to be there and they have accessed it’s not going to be probably based on the current downturn they are already experiencing.

We are reading between the lines here discussing the viability of attending Dusseldorf show in terms of vehicle sales and what the economy will look like, the Hymer press release said that it was down to the risk of CV infection, I firmly believe that if there were no social distancing restrictions re CV then Hymer and others would be there in force.

I am with Jim on this one, crowded venue, lots of travel, and it's not going to happen.
Scale it down for this country, the big shows are not going ahead, whether it is motorhome, steam fairs, country fairs or whatever.
You have the uncertainty over travelling, no big crowds, trying to social distance, and then the actual cost of attending, along with the fact of international buyers aren't going to be there in the numbers required.
Give this year a miss, and come back bigger and better next year.

Not if you finance it.

Let me throw in some speculation here. Hymer will know from its website stats if people have been getting busy with the configurators, maybe they reckon they don't need to do the show this year.

Yeah, I saw that yesterday in a leak on the Swift website.

;)
Probably there won’t be able to stick to their 2021 model time table either due to delays in the design departments etc.
