I have mentioned this before in another thread :- The Highwayman, Kidlington, alongside the South Oxford Canal, ('Morse' country,) easy bus access to Oxford, close to Woodstock. Good walks and dog friendly.

We have stayed here http://www.netherwoodtouringsite.co.uk/ on the Shropshire union canal. Couple of mile walk to Chester, pubs either way along the tow path.

Stayed there last September, nice dog walks, daughter got up early and went along to the pub a few minutes away for a full English and an easy bus ride into Chester from site entrance.
