Can you help me identify this tree/fruits of tree in South of France please.

This was growing in a garden along the tow path just south of Narbonne. It’s possibly a speciman tree as we saw no others. The fruits were lying on the ground and were slightly larger than tennis balls. I asked some walkers but their only contribution was that you wouldn’t want one falling on your head. Thé fruits wee quite sticky on the outside snd pulpy in the inside and the ants seemed to like the bashed ones.

A very handy tip for identifying almost anything. If you have Google photos, open your photo and press the little Google lens button along the bottom. Google will then search and usually find a match. 👍
