My daughter has decided to chop in her cr and buy probably a 3 or 4 year old VW which she wants to convert into a camper. She will probably spend around £17k on the vehicle.

Looking for recommendations on someone in and around York area that does conversion work on vehicles - eg add a pop up roof. cooker and a rock and roll bed etc

Thanks

I would read the latest DVLA requiements for having a vehicle classification changed into a Motor Caravan, the following is a quote from the new regs.

Motor caravan external permanent features
This list describes the external features which are commonly seen in motor caravans, and it is intended to provide guidance on what DVLA expects to see when considering your application:

  • 2 or more windows on at least one side of the main body (this does not include windows on the driver or passenger doors) to provide a reasonable amount of daylight into the living accommodation
  • a separate door which provides access to the living accommodation of the vehicle (this excludes the driver and passenger doors); a window on this door counts as a separate window on the main body
  • motor caravan-style graphics on both sides of the vehicle
  • an awning bar attached to either side of the vehicle
  • a high-top roof (this does not include a pop-top elevating roof)
DVLA will need photographic evidence of the completed conversion.

I would add that this new guidance is under review following comments and queries from the general public. The VW is such a popular choice for conversion and I would be surprised if the DVLA was intending to stop future conversions.
Also, again according to the guidelines there is nothing to stop the vehicle being used as a motor caravan even if the body type is not changed. The advantage of having the body type changed to Motor Caravan is that there are more insurance companies to get quotes from.

As your daughter is intending to spend a fair amount of money it is perhaps useful to have this information before committing to the expenditure.
