Ive recently read a thread on the Fiat forum that made me think about this issue.
I'm sure ive read about it here before and thought this is a good forum to ask the questions. first what is it ? on ducatos water ingress gets on injectors and cambelt. in cold weather the ice freezes .
option 1 just locks up belt teeth stripped engine turned, catastrophe.
option 2 belt just slips engine turned, catastrophe.
1 does this happen to engines other than front wheel drive ducatos eg Mercs or rear wheel Ivecos.
2 with a sizable contingent going skiing how prevelent is this as a problem.
3 what temperatures are important (obviously <0C but what is important factors)
4 are the problems really cold temperatures (not often seen in Britain, especialy southern softy part) and belt near end of life?
5 what is done to specificaly avoid this? if anything. park at an angle to drain from belt? Employ all anti scuttle issue techniques?

Sorry if this is a bit rushed and it doesn't all make sense but please allay my fears other than by saying its march the frosts are gone good weather is on its way.

Edit just reading the Adria thread about it, handing if i spotted that first

Belt slip when it's below freezing is normally because there's not enough antifreeze in the coolant and the water pump is frozen... which locks up the belt and causes timing slippage.

Why would there be insufficient anti freeze in nearly new motorhomes? Most run neat undiluted additives.

Definitely rushed, we had a frost one morning down here in the "southern softy bit",though I'd comfortably put the southern bit where I was born up against your slightly cool northern climes, as I was born on the wilds of Dartmoor, and we frequently had to step out of the bedroom windows to get out of the house when snow drifts were about!!

Water runs behind the scuttle, drips onto the rubbish engine cover which allows it to run into the injector 'valley' from where it exits onto the cambelt and gears, freezes around the lower pulley (crank) filling in the groves between the teeth effectively making the crank pulley round and then the belt slips. Nothing to do with the water pump and coolant.

Correct, but could be to do with lack of antifreeze IF water pump freezes, although you would possibly have a scrap engine anyway!
