I have 3 x 110Ah batteries connected pos to pos to pos in my shed kept topped up via direct connection to 2 x small 4.8a solar panels on the shed roof (no controller) - whilst it seems to do the job, the panels are not in full Sun so I'm thinking of moving them into full sunlight - which means siting them approx 8m away - can I use household 2.5mm cable without any appreciable loss ?

I'm assuming you mean 2 x 4.8 Watts for the solar panels. In that case, the maximum amps will be 0.8A. The voltage drop over 2 x 8m of 2.5mm2 cable would be 88 millivolts, which is a percentage loss of 0.6%. That's well within the acceptable range, usually taken to be 3%.
