I read the new May mag, and I got the impression they would be opening sites from 1 st July.
Any thoughts?

If you watch the daily Govt briefings you’d probably disregard that

Too early to tell, but not impossible with a few precautions. Clearly the government want to try very hard to get the right balance between kickstarting the economy and avoiding/minimising a second wave. I really admire those in power who have to make such decisions, as they just know that whatever they do it will be wrong and negatively reported in the BBC/ITV/GMB etc., despite the fact that they are genuinely trying to do the right thing by everybody.

Don't think's there will be any sites open this year not holding my breath for that long writing this year off

If true I can see it causing a free for all, they would maybe need you to carry proof of booking or everybody would be off, saying they were booked on a site but stopping where they wanted ?

it will effectively have to end non essential travel

Like many businesses, who have indicated they're planning on opening up at some time in the near future. You can't just switch everything back on overnight so they're now getting ready even though quite rightly IMO, as yet there are no positive dates being given but at least they'll be ready.

I'm with Jim here as, maybe with a few restrictions, I can't see it being too difficult to operate a campsite, certainly the smaller ones but probably not the "supersites". Some of the bigger retailers have already started re-opening with restrictions and now places like MacDonalds and Greggs are experimenting.

I think you have a good point - perhaps a confirmed pre-booking should be a requirement.

I reckon sites will be one of the first things back, certainly long before bars, restaurants hotels etc
Completely agree, Jim. Very easy to practice social distancing on a site with the 6 metre separation between pitches. It is almost a no brainer......

But why? It is easy to practice social distancing on a campsite with 6 metres between pitches combined with a government eager to get the economy moving in a responsible manner..... as above, they look like being one of the first things to open up as soon as essential travel is eased

It says in the mag subject to gov advice so have to wait and see. The Spanish restrictions that look possible include no travel outside the area which would help control people just heading off into the hills with no pitch booked.

It does depend a lot though on what people do when they get there!

Other than not opening shower and toilet blocks (in effect, making all sites like glorified simple C.L's) I can't think of one reason why sites couldn't be opened.

Having said that, can you imagine the howl from the media when the first 'wobble box' overturns on the M5.

I know.... but it can be no worse than B&Q, Sainsgogs or Maccie D’s. Easier to control I would have thought. Every other shower stall etc. Or close them completely and rely on own facilities which would be tough on the tenting community

I did think about them and agree it would be tough unless the sites had a serious look at their 'Facilities'. However, in most I've been in, the opportunities for avoiding close contact especially in a steamy atmosphere are very limited.

Yes.... simply shut them. Job done - but those who boast of never using their facilities will be horrified. I saw a couple with a hugely expensive Cathargo A class, topping up the water tank from a watering can and making the regular treks to the shower block for absolutely everything. Total waste of a hundred grand

C and MC Pitches already have the required social distancing. They could restrict entry to the toilets and showers by closing every other cubicle and hopefully members would play the distance game. Other sites, like Jim’s could do this as well.
No Kissing, cuddling or group get togethers either.
Sorted, let’s all go camping.

So you get to the site, pitch up and then?? No pubs, no restaurants and visitor attractions severely limited in what they can offer. Don’t get me wrong as I’m panting to get away but not just to sit on a pitch and gloat that I managed to be there! The world will have changed when we’re allowed out again.

This is from July. Hopefully things will have lightened up a bit by then. If not we’ll just have to drink and shout to our friends, a bit like now.

I think if they are staying on the site all the time or heading off to do fairly sensible things then it will be fairly low risk. If they head off to beauty spots in huge numbers with no distancing travel long distances and stop at busy service stations and have big get togethers then it will be a problem. As I say it depends what they do when they get there.

We did the NC500 last year. Never went in a pub or restaurant. The free visitor attractions were superb.
I don't think any of our motorhomes would be welcome for quite a while yet.

Plenty of nice cycle rides, great walks with the dogs, sat out with a beer, get away for a break in the fresh air, take your own food/drink, use the vans toilet/shower.

Not for everyone of course but it will suit a lot of people after a couple of months porridge time

A friend asks if the swingers meets are then excluded?

As the note says "at the time of publication" and the date of 1st July is just a reiteration of the previous notification that sites will be closed until 30th June.
Given this, I don't read that as we're going to reopen then but just a notification to keep checking the website for future site opening plans.
