Ive had people say you do and people say you don't, trying to get any sense out of the call centre agents at HMRC is a nighmare so if anybody has any knowledge about this please let me know

Cheers

ROL is in EU and VAT has to be paid on vehicles imported from the EU on both new and second hand vehicles.

And import duty has also to be paid on second hand vehicles (not on new vehicles)

Absolutely no disrespect to ANY of our Irish friends intended. You need to be 100% absolutely certain of the origins of motorhomes bought from the ROI. Many many stolen vans get shipped to Ireland and some return under a different identity. It is BIG business in some places and the Garda know but do nothing

Absolutely no disrespect to ANY of our British friends intended. Ireland 10% the population size and 13K registered MHs vs 225K registered MHs in the UK. If even half the vans that are stolen and reportedly end up in Ireland were to, the market would likely collapse due to over supply. I’d give a warning on suspension issues or chassis rust given there's no point on the island more than 65miles from the sea and the roads are bloody terrible…… if I wanted to venture off topic. That said don't I feel like the idiot having gone over to the UK to BUY my campervan in 2019.

My apologies to the OP.

I agree with regard to the numbers and that 99% of all Irish folk are wonderful people. The issue has been mentioned before and it appears to be a couple of rogue families (it has been suggested they are travellers) on farms down south. The UK police with the assistance of the Garda conducted a couple of operations to recover stolen vehicles and found evidence of many more. The same team also tracked stolen high end cars to the UAE. The fact that we use right hand drive cars limits the places that cloned cars can be sold on. Back to the Irish issue, the police and customs at the docks shows a lot of vehicles leaving the mainland before being reported stolen. The police then circulated a notice to all forces about a gang stealing motorhomes overnight, but it seems the issue is still going on.

Sorry, but the eye of suspicion does still fall on the Irish traveller community that frequently knock on doors to harass owners to sell for cash. Often followed within a week or so an attempt is made to steal the vehicle

I find it strange to say the least that Motorhome thieves have to come from another country. Perhaps all the UK citizens are all fine upstanding citizens 😳

We have more than our fair share of wrong un's and the majority of vehicles stolen remain here or bits of them do. I was reading recently about a Polish guy arrested for car theft. Stole or obtained a stolen car, usually Mercedes, BMW or Audi every time he was to go home to visit family. Took it on the ferry and then after his holiday, flew back, using the money from the sale to pay for his trip. He returned to Poland 5 or 6 times a year. A Romanian friend of mine was saying this is common practice for many Eastern Europeans living here, working cash in hand

Please bear in mind that I used to buy and sell motorhomes and have been to many many auctions, where stolen recovered vehicles make up a lot of vehicles for sale.
