Hello, I'm new here and new to this market. Looking to buy a new motorhome and a dealer says he has a 2019 model (new) available in August 2020. Does that sound usual and are there any implications? Thanks

Seems strange that it's not available now, you would need to check the spec of 2019 vs 2020 models and remember that it is not far off a year old when you buy it so that should reflect in the price, check what chassis changes there have been in that period.

Motorhomes are like cars used to be 30 years ago. Each year a "new" model is launched and they have a list of optional extras as long as your arm. The new year's models start arriving on the forecourts in October/November of the previous years. When that happens the dealers have to start reducing their current year stock in order to clear it to make way for the new ones. To give you an example I got nearly 20% discount off list price on my 2015 Hymer when I bought it new in November 2015, because it was surrounded by 2016 stock on the forecourt.

So, in normal years if you were buying a "new" 2019 model in 2020 you would expect a very healthy discount off of its list price. But this is not a "normal" year because of you know what. So who knows what will happen to prices. I think they will probably stagnate for at least another year, but I could be wrong. One thing is for sure, the more keen you sound to buy it, the less discount you will get. So best to play it uber cool.

But, as I have said on another thread of yours, you really should not buy a new motorhome for your first one. Perceived wisdom is that you will not buy the one that is right for you until your 3rd one. And you will lose a lot more buying new and then selling, rather than buying second hand. Unless you get a really good deal on the price in the first place.

You should a good discount for a 2019 model as they obviously couldn't shift it.

I looked at a Grand Canyon S a year old at a dealer, both hab and engine batteries were totally flat, electric sliding door wouldn't open due to it.

How do I find the actual RRP of the model? (My husband should be doing this research as I'm not really in to motor vehicles however he - at the moment - is still working...so I might ask silly questions, sorry)

I agree with peterc10 about not buying new, at least not without a lot of research first. I did a lot of research even buying secondhand.

Whilst it is true that many people change their first/second MHs, it maybe because they did not do enough research. It was not my experience, as I bought a 6-year N&B and it has proved to be what we want after 10 years. Bought privately and It cost 35-40% of its listed price at new and had done 16,000 miles. There are good quality MHs out there like that.

Search for new ones and look up the price but it also depends on what options have been fitted

If you are not in a rush then buying in Germany will save you a packet on a new Hymer Grand Canyon S, just have a look on mobile.de and you will be amazed.

Thanks all. I suppose we are a bit in a rush. Husband's only has work until July and we want to make the most of the time he is out of work (probably a year). Not able, obviously, to visit showrooms so this is why we are seriously considering buying over the net. We know the quality of the Hymer (have a friend with one although we haven't seen it) and it's between that model and a VW Grand California. We intend to use this for lots of travelling this year and next both here in UK and once things are a bit more back to normal, to visit his family in Denmark (don't want to fly for a long time)

It looks on today's government announcement that unlimited mileage will be allowed in UK, but they were talking about going to parks for walking, so I would not be surprised if they row back on that for MH travel. Also Scotland and Wales seem to be reisting allowing MHs in.

As for getting by MH to Denmark you need the borders into France, Benelux, Germany and Denmark to be open, which according to some governments they do not seem too hopeful about, certainly within a year. Also what happens if there is a second locldown - not impossible.

You would be taking a big chance buying new now IMO.

As for buying on the internet, with inability to inspect, there will be a lot more scammers out there dumping rubbish.

'Act in haste, regret at leisure'

Best bet for you would be to hold off for 3 months without committing any money and see what the situation is then.

Save yourself a whole load of money and grief, and use it straight away....???

You could cut out the need to travel through France and Belgium by taking the ferry from Harwich to Hook of Holland than driving through Germany to Denmark. Last time I looked the border between the Netherlands and Germany was open, not sure about Denmark.

You can often find old pricelists by googling and as luck would have it the 2019 Hymercar UK pricelist can be found here: https://www.campersales.co.uk/guides/hymercar/HYMERCAR_Pricelist_GB.pdf

I would download it and save a copy as it might get taken down at some point.

We seriously considered the Hymercar Grand Canyon S, we had a good look around a couple. We loved the van in every way except the rear bed which felt really small. I wouldn't trust the brochure measurements which seem to put it in the best light but when you actually look at the bed it's cut off in several places and just felt really cramped to us.

I thought the bed was nice, I'm 6 foot 3 inch and because of the cut outs either side of the Merc base could sleep transversely.

Just shows we are all different.

Thanks a lot for that price list. Have you by any chance found the 2020 price listing as we now have an option of a new one. I've had a search and can't find it.

That can be found on the Hymer website:

When ordering remember the weight of all the extras, including the package options, has to be deducted from the payload. Hymer are very good and give all the weights in their price list. Payload is important if you are planning long trips.

Some dealers have good reputations and some not so good. It can make a big difference when it comes to warranty and follow up work (they all perform brilliantly at the sales stage). When I had a Hymer I got good service from Premier Motorhomes near Chichester and other Funsters have said good things about Becks in Norfolk. Well worth checking dealer reputations.
