I've had my motorhome for around a month now. Today I noticed that the spare butane bottle does not have a knob on the top to open the gas supply. It has a sort of cap on the top with a pin that you pull out to release it. I am assuming that the knob is missing? If so, is it possible to get a replacements and fit it?

The norm is Propane not butane, a picture help identify what your bottle is (and the problem)

Regards

Jim

Are you talking about a regulator ?

butane bottles for the old superser heaters had a regulator you push on and turned a little lever to hold it on its probably one of those and will require the correct regulator

If you have a regulator on the van you will need a connector like this, but only if the van has it's own regulator

When you say spare, do you mean the other one is butane as well, if so the knob is part of the regulater , you have to take the whole thing off and put it on your other one, can't remember off hand but I think you have to turn the knob right down against a spring and the whole thing jumps off.

Easiest is to take it to a Calor dealer. They will change it for propane. (You will need to buy the propane gas)

The cap with the spring clip is just to stop dirt getting in the gas valve when in storage.
Here's a picture of the bottle top with the protective cap.

And here's a picture of the regulator you need for butane.

ps John H. Calor are only replacing "like for like" at the moment, and that's if you can find one of their branches that's actually open ?

Thanks for the replies. My research also suggest that I need a regulator. I do have a Truma 30mb regulator on the bulkhead. What do I need to connect the butane regulator on the bottle to the regulator on the bulkhead? I would change it for propane but its almost a full bottle so seems silly to waste it.

You need something called a "pigtail" to suit the bottle. A typical Calor butane bottle uses as 21mm push fit pigtail. Unfortunately, pigtails (which are very simple devices) cost, for some absurd reason, about 3 times the cost of a regulator (a complex device) which will be no use to you. Assuming your existing bottle that works is propane, I'd swap the spare butane bottle out for one of those, rather than investing in summer only butane equipment.

Not at the moment, they are not swopping different products!

If you have a Regulator on the bulkhead, you DO NOT NEED an additional 'Regulator' on that bottle.

You need an ADAPTOR. It is identical in all outward appearances from a Regulator however, there are no innards in an adaptor to regulate! the flow of gas.

If you should fit another Regulator in addition to the bulkhead fitment the gas would be over regulated and come out at a trickle, so to speak.

Thank you - that is useful. I just need to find one. What would it be described as?

You do not need a regulator, you need an adapter as my post #5 and a hose

How about this (other places will be available)

Please Note. There been a stirring of the grey cells that tells me the diameter could??? be 20mm

I would say all this new regulater and things is going to cost more than a bottle of gas for what is just going to be a one off.
If you were going to stick with butane then fair enough.

Once it's set up no problem with using one red and one blue, except when it is very cold

If you have a bbq point you can feed a regulated supply/ bottle through it.
