Business use?

No, the initial journey was to a campsite to be near his place of work, therefore it is business. If he then got a taxi etc next day 100 miles away in the opposite direction then it would have been personal, but as the site was chosen to be near work it will be business.

It's not worth risking insurance, in the event of a major claim they will look for anything to get out of paying.
I disagree. Though I do agree it is not worth the risk, hence me suggesting the op arguing the point I.e. getting prior agreement from the Insurer.
The 'risk' is that, in the event if a claim, a similarly inexperienced person declines a claim, adding additional stress when you could do without it, leading to the argument/discussion at the worst time.
I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know if there is precedent, I'm just giving my opinion based on my experience.

Worst case scenario is that it is classed as commuting, which might be the case with SOME insurers who would regard driving to the railway station before catching train to work as commuting.
Commuting is, however, not Business Use.

I'm glad this caused some debate as I do think its in the grey.
The wording on my policy is (for business use) something like driving to one or more places in connection with work and I suppose it would be in connection as its the purpose of my trip.
