I'm a newbie
The last time I posted on this site I said I was going back to towing a tin tent. Most of you wished me luck, some said I was mad, and a lot of you said I'll be back. Well, its true, after my first disastrous tugging trip I very nearly did chuck it in. At fist I was a bit concerned my Kodiaq Sportline would be underpowered but it handled surprisingly well considering its only a 1.4. Anyway to get to the crunch, I completely forgot I had the van in tow and uprooted a gatepost as I entered a carpark. Oh bum! I said, or words to that effect. Estimates for the damage ranged between £900 & £1400 but doing the work myself cost thirty quid. When I've got 5 mins I'll post a photo of my handy work if you promise not to laugh.

They asked me how I knew
It was Esso Blue
I of course replied
With lower grades one buys
Smoke gets in your eyes.
Nice one.
They don’t write ‘em like that any more! :ROFLMAO:

Apart from major upset with gatepost(gateposts are the bane of life for caravanners eh?) what do you think of the different holiday style?

Always best to do the repairs yourself. When a lorry damaged my MoHo, the estimate was best part of £1000. I did it for £90.
I hope you're happy with the caravan, we enjoyed ours for 20 years before changing to a MoHo.

Still got my wobble box it’s the same length as my old Fleetwood Jamboree. The upside is that I have something to drive about in.and I still use less fuel

I glad to see the wit hasn't changed on hear, I remember the Esso Blue add very well and now that you've mentioned it I can't stop humming it. Going even further back didn't George Formby sing something about gate posts or was it lamp posts? I know its too much to ask but please don't laugh at my before and after shots and don't ask which is which and don't zoon out too much. So I haven't got the paint match quite right but I know which shade to ask for next when I do the final coat. I found the exact replacement decals online but if I can find something I like that covers the whole panel I might consider that. or perhaps you guys will come up with your own ridiculous suggestions, :thanks3: --- I can't wait.

nice repair I'd be happy with that if of course it was a camper rather than a caravan ;)

I know who to come to should the worse happen 👍🏼

That’s a brilliant repair. It would be really helpful as a resource here if you posted details of how you did it, in case anyone else has a similar scrape.

WE wouldn’t do ANYTHING like that 🙄
Not US.
We is all Perfect.
Ps nice job mate.
Mitch.

really good job ... new panel or filler?

Excellent repair job. When I clattered the rear of our motorhome (twice :whistle2:) went to a wee local paint guy who got out the colour swatches by the dozen rather than his tech matching gun thingy and you cannot tell the difference. You'll probably have someone similar close by.

For as long as I can remember I've towed caravans, (lots of them) but the reasons I bought a motorhome was two fold. I was recovering from a knee replacement which made hitching, unhitching, winding steadies up and down and general farting about a total pain. And I thought it would make life a lot easier travelling through France Germany to reach Austria where it was our intention to support our son and granddaughter in the Iron Man Event but of course covid put the knockers on that. We did manage a couple of runs down to Devon but the last trip proved fatal. Nothing to do with my driving this time, It was a number of things really the first mistake was taking our granddaughter with us, the second was taking her to one of our favored sites which has beautiful views and acres of space. I should have realized although an empty ten acre field is ideal for us its by no means suitable for a five year old. And when she trod in a pile of sheep shit, well you'd think WW3 had broken out. However the final straw was my dear wife falling out the van which is quite a drop if you miss all the steps, and as you may have read in a previous post, miraculously she didn't spill a drop from her glass. She put a brave face on things but I could see it upset her and I knew the MH days were numbered. The kind of sites we prefer are well off the beaten track which was another nail in the MHs coffin. Unless you have a vehicle man enough to transport or tow a small car then even a 7mt van is not ideal for single lane tracks. And shopping trips into small villages also had its moments. So as things are a caravan is more suitable for our needs but once getting to and travelling in Europe ever returns to normal we may be back on the road waving to you guys again.

There is an in depth repair method on Utube and a bodywork forum, the only thing I will say is if the damage is deep and the skin is split like mine was then its best to use P40 fibre glass filler first to give a strong bond before using P38 as a finishing filler. The first coat of primer will highlight any defects but its just a matter of keep on refilling, rubbing down using a wood block and very fine wet and dry with plenty of water to prevent scratching.
