Just been sorting out my BT contract and discover that they are introducing a fixed Tariff of £2 per day for using your Phone in the EU it basically states roaming but since you have to have roaming on to actually use it this is another cost to bear.

Strange after we were originally told there were no plans to reintroduce roaming charges I wonder if people traveling here from Europe pay for roaming and thinking about it if people travelling from NI do if visiting Ireland?

Ive changed from Sky to O2 for similar reasons they allow 25gb fair use at no extra cost. Tesco allow unlimited but I couldnt get the sim to work on 4g.

Funnily enough The Wino ive just been in to buy a vodafone spain sim to keep some uk data back for TV and there was a dutch guy in there doing the same. The ability to impose fair usage has always been there for everyone, I reckon its the aftermath of the economic chaos caused by the lockdowns that has made the phone companies look for get outs.

The ops point was not about fair usage it was about being charged per day to use the fair usage amount ( as I understand it). This is quite likely to spread to other providers. There is one cause of letouts for the phone providers we all know what it is!

I moved to Tesco from Three a year ago as 3 was totally zero signal in my house or anywhere in this part of Kent!! Three was fantastic in the US as it was all free including data. Racked up what would have been a huge bill when out and about.

Tesco still free to roam in all EU member states and the EEA countries. Just checked my bill online after using it across Europe to Northern Moravia and home via Austria... £0 on top of the £10 I pay a month.

As I said the OPS point was about a roaming charges in addition to the fair use policy. The dutch won't have a roaming charge in addition as it looks like we will.
I guess our phone companies have the freedom to choose the most appriate model for their business , the idea being to balance the shortfall of people taking the mick with roaming data etc with the likely number of lost accounts if they get it wrong. They probably have more customers who are happy to pay £14 twice a year and not worry about data than change contracts, afterall most of the customers they want will be more bothered about which handset they "include" than the number of days they can spend in the EU.

Thats true although the companies would not legally be able to make a roaming charge if we were still in the EU they did say when we left there was no intention to reintroduce them......yeah right!!

They were always able to put fair use limits on. I was speaking to Vrench this winter who habitually buy a Spanish sim for watching catch up tv etc.

No we Don. Just restricted to whatever your plan Is.

As above there sre no EU roaming charges they are illegal. You are just restricted to what plan you have.

I’m in the EU now with BT mobile and have been for 3 of the last 4 weeks. I’ve just checked my account on the BT app and no charges shown to date.

I have declined several offers to take a new contract which would mean I would lose the guarantee of increases only by inflation, so maybe it’s necessary to check your contract.

Absolutely spot on, they did say l would continue to use my allowance as previous but the £2.00 is to cover additional EU roaming costs and that other providers would recover their outgoings by charging extra via call charges etc.

I have a contract with EE from pre-2021 so I avoid the £2 a day charge. It’s a bit rich if you ask me to be charged this, does it cost the phone company anywhere near this

So why are these EU citizens buying spanish sims then?

No idea? Maybe they don't have data? I never used to . Maybe they haven't turned roaming on before they left or they have used what is available on there plan?
Or like me even though I have 2 x spanish mobile numbers & a data sim I usually get a Uk sim as no one will phone me on a spanish number due to the cost.

I couldn't find this. My BT contract is Roam Like Home with my data, text and calls valid in 47(?) countries which includes Europe. Outside this there are additional chargers.

As you can see below it’s happening.
I have just, had to change my contract. Now with ee. Part of bt. Yes it's £2 perday or £10 per month. Not good but hey what can you do these days.
Correct EE is the Mobile framework for BT Moblie usage.
l didn’t get advised of the £10pm,therefore,this is actually good news as l was thinking 31day month £62.00 cost.

I'm pretty sure O2 said recently they were never going to charge for roaming (up to fair use) but I could be wrong.... They certainly don't at the moment.

All the B word has done is mean that companies have just had to re-negotiate the deals with EU providers. Don't forget, EU people do want to visit the UK, and would also like no roaming charges, so the incentive is there ;)

Dig deeper with BT and you will find this on page 132 of their T&C:

Fair use policy The EU Mobile Roaming regulations allow us to operate a fair use policy that applies in the following situations: Data Roaming When you’re data roaming in any of the destinations in the table above, if your SIM Only, Family SIM or Handset plan includes a data allowance of more than 50GB, and you use more than our fair use policy allowance of 50GB of data in one monthly billing period, we’re allowed to charge you a surcharge if you carry on roaming in these destinations. If you go over both our fair use policy and the data allowance for your SIM Only, Family Sim or Handset plan, we can charge you both the out of plan charge for data and the surcharge for breaking our fair use policy. We’ll warn you before you go over the fair use policy limit and when you reach the limit. The data roaming surcharges which may be applied are detailed here.

As always, the devil is in the detail.

We left the uk in September 2021 for Spain. Had a couple of weeks back over new year, then 3 months in Cyprus, couple of weeks back in April, been back in Spain since April, in uk again in july for the summer.

O2 are now charging £5-10 a month extra (on a £8/month tariff) but we need uk numbers for business and family, as gus-lopez said, people won't call spanish numbers.

We have our own wifi at our spanish place and mainly use wifi elsewhere, and we're only on 4 gb a month on phones, so this charge is not for data useage, but being out of uk too long.

A fee well worth paying to stay on our travels..... 😎

Ive just rememered something. My Vodafone.es payg sim has a 50gb limit in Spain or 10gb if roaming. The first question the lady in the phone shop asked was whether I needed roaming. That to me is a fair usage limit.

And you need to keep digging to find the charges for using over 50Gb - I gave up 😡

If you think about this, it always had to happenbecause the market has changed massively, a few years ago 50gb was seen as a big chunk of data but now with social media and people sharing videos of all kind the usage has increased imensely including the need to add capacity.

Foreign networks have always charged visiting members networks and they have no other way to do this other than per gb. The current legislation forces them to allow open access to visitors and doesnt allow them to set up any deals, like Vodafone here in Spain restricting their network to Vodafone customers in other countries. How else are we going to incentivise the cellular companies to develop and maintain the networks?

We are with Plusnet, owned by BT uses EE, no roaming charges and so far no plans to introduce them.
We have a fair usage policy in place which applies to any plans with a data allowance of 20GB or more each month. If you use more than 15GB of your monthly allowance in one billing cycle when visiting a Roam Like at Home destination, you might have to pay a surcharge for any extra data usage.

and

Use data when in the UK or in a Roam Like at Home Band 1 destination10p per MB

On my last trip, just back a few days ago, EE didn't make any roaming charges as my contract is pre 2021. Nor any data restrictions whilst there is covid. I suspect this will change soon.
