Hi, looking for advice on where to stay.
I am taking my daughters and granddaughter to see Billy Joel next July.
We need somewhere to stay overnight that won't break the bank.
We are travelling from Malvern, so the London station would be Paddington. Or...
Would you suggest we drive to the outskirts, get a hotel, and get the tube.
Or get the train, and stay centrally.

Any recommendations?

I don't know what time the concert ends, or when the tubes stop running at night.

I don't go into London, bit of a country mouse. And I don't want to take them to a fleapit, or somewhere that isn't very safe.

Here's hoping for some insider knowledge.

Thanks

Karen

You say daughters, how many, 2? And one granddaughter. The train and staying centrally for 4 definitely will be on the most expensive side but feels more of a treat.

There is a ccc site at Chertsey about a mile from the train station where a train runs about every half hour into London Waterloo. Nice site beside the Thames at Chertsey Bridge.
There is also a C&MHC site at Abbey Wood.

The big Hotel chains (Hilton etc) used to do special weekend deals?

Lots of Premier Inns around. Plain decor but clean. Usually they are cheaper if you book early. Choose one close to any tube station and you can use the tube to get the gig.

Or you could take the motorhome and stay at Abbey Wood campsite which is within walking distance of of a station on the new Elizabeth line.

My nieces are coming with me to see Simply Red. There is a rumour Pulp might be touring next year and they want to go there with me too  I am so chuffed they still think I am cool enough to be seen out with:giggle:(y)

So many options …and it depends a bit on the age and number of those involved.
Premier Inn is a great budget option. A site like www.booking.com has all sorts and all budgets including self catering, which might work better for a larger group.
Getting around central London is easy at almost any time - the tube can get lively on a busy weekend night but it’s still safe. Theres so much choice at every budget in London,

Not knowing your budget makes hotel picking very difficult, personally I would look at a place within walking distance.

Weve stayed at the Thistle trafalgar squre a few times, ideally placed for a jaunt
the tube is an 8 minute ride to hyde park.

July is gonna be pricier which ever way you cut it if its during term break

quite a good few shop door ways don't mind you as long as you shift by 7 am' ::bigsmile:

Born in 1949, so your right, he's just a youngster!
Now that depends how old you are that you can laugh at that too :giggle:

We went to BST this year. Saw the Eagles headline one night and Adele later in the week. Stayed on the motorhome at Crystal Palace site and travelled in on tube and good old buses. Staying at Abbey Wood will definitely work if it suits you. Both concerts finished around 10:30 to 11:00pm. Apparently the music licence doesn’t allow it to run later and disturb the wealthy neighbours. 😉
BTW - saw Billy Joel at Wembley not long before COVID Pandemic. Still excellent. Enjoy!!

You could try the Hyde Park Hotel.

It’s not flash but does have parking at the front.
We used to stay there when we went to the Radio 2 events a few years back.

We’ve stayed in decent 3* hotels within walking distance of Hyde Park / Royal Albert Hall.
Use an Expedia, Bookings.com type site to find them.
We’ve also used HI Express, Premier Inn, etc. for our gigs around UK but not for Paddington area 🤷‍♂️ (y)

Would it be a bit crass to suggest having a look on Airbnb ?

Thanks for the suggestions and the banter! I saw him at Old Trafford and the atmosphere was fantastic. Everyone singing along.
This is his only European date next year. Splashing the cash, because, who knows whether he will tour again.

But max £200 for the hotel I think.

I cant take the motorhome because I don't have 4 belted seats.

I have looked at Airbnb too, just don't know the geography.

Oh, and I bought cancellation insurance lol.

Oops the hotel we used was called Mitre House Hotel
