Just changed our return journey and was advised that as of 4th July all passengers and crew are required to wear masks at all times in public areas, except when eating and drinking of course. French government instruction apparently, no notice of course. Thanks Napoleon Micron.
Deep joy!

Why the comment about Macron? Covid is taking off again so masks are sensible.

It's been a long hot day here in Brittany and the CCP site we chose turned out to be naff. Plus the thought of 8 hours on the BF from St Malo wearing a mask somewhat destroyed my day, hence the comment. Oh yes and the shower mixer tap needs replacing as well. On the brighter side filled up with GPL at 80 cents per litre. C'est la vie.

I travelled Poole - Cherbourg with BF in late March and returned mid April and mask wearing was obligatory both times - but lacked enforcement. With hardly anybody on board (I had the whole bar area to myself!) it was not a problem

Yeah cos it stopped it in its tracks before didn't it?

We just got to live with it, just had/got it and its like a cold, if in winter I got a cold or flu I wouldn't wear a mask.

Thanks for the warning.

For what it’s worth, during the previous obligatory mask wearing period, I would wear the surgical ones similar to those provided by the NHS when I was vaccinating.

However, I bought a pack of FFP2 masks the other day and they are a complete revelation. SO much easier to breathe, as the stiffer filter is held away from the mouth and nose. No condensation and no misting of specs. Also available in bright colours from Amazon and many other suppliers so you can OWN THAT LOOK when you’re out on retail duty!

We had it late April, and yes for us too it was like a slightly unusual cold, albeit it left us exhausted for several weeks. But our son and daughter-in-law, young and fit unlike us, have currently got presumably the BA.5 variant and are completely laid low nearly 2 weeks in.
I don’t recall colds killing quite as many people either. It’s totally irresponsible to generalise that it’s “just like a cold” when for a significant proportion of people it’s way more than that.

I think i read winter flu kills 10,000 people a year, but may be wrong.

Good to hear, I’ve just ordered some FFP2 masks, as someone who is in the medical profession has advised they’re the best ones.

My GP surgery has just posted on their Facebook page that they are reintroducing face masks as of today.

I think they have been superseded by the FFP3
Don’t think so - FFP3 have always been around, but earlier in the pandemic were in very short supply for general use. It’s maybe misleading though - I’ve always used FFP2, which as MantheVan said are pretty comfortable for many people; in view of current levels I ordered some FFP3 from Amazon as well, but they appear identical to the FFP2 ones! I think some FFP3 come with respirator valves and can reportedly be difficult to wear .

I have a stock of FFP2 with respirator valves.

Mrs DDJC who knows about these says that FFP3 is used in her hospitals, following fit testing. FFP2 can be worn by nearly everyone. I only use FFP2, with or without valves. Those papery ones protect others from you, but do not protect you from them. For that you need FFP2 or FFP3.

The news that services are re-introducing masks is for me, sad but necessary news. Covid is seeping back and the primary reason is that people are going maskless everywhere.

Because they are totally unatural and you are breathing back in what your body needs to breath out

That is factually incorrect.
The carbon dioxide, nitrogen, argon and unused oxygen all gets though the mask weave.

More than three quarters of a million people are currently experiencing long term symptoms
Four hundred and seven people died from Covid last week
You had it and it was like a cold.
Lucky you.

If you don't feel the need to wear a mask, please keep your distance from those of us who are.

So we should get surgeons to leave them off too? After all, if what you say is true (and it isn't, it is just plain daft!) then we don't want to operated on by someone wearing a mask for up to 16 hours, breathing in "toxic" used air!

I have slightly mixed views on this.
I stuck by the rules (including mask wearing) but haven't wore a mask anywhere for months.
So far I have avoided Covid, but feel that it is only a matter of time before I do catch it.
I understand that for anyone vulnerable, mask wearing is essential.
For the remainder of us, we just need to get on with life and accept the fact that we will likely get Covid more than once in the next few years. Hopefully in most cases it will be fairly mild.

No need if you are that worried just dont go near us who want to live our lives, you know who we are we are not wearing a mask simples?
So, does that mean that you can go into a cafe or shop and expect those who do advocate masks to avoid you.? Surely you should be doing all the avoiding?

Yeah, you go with that! A friend of mine who I worked with a while ago also wanted to "live his life" and decided he didn't need to wear a mask. Four weeks ago, he died of a Covid related complication. He tested positive, over two weeks he got worse, went into hospital and didn't come out... Alive! He had two jabs, but missed his third, because he thought it was all over. His wife also caught it, but luckily was OK after a week. She would tell you, he died of stupidity!

He is not "living his life" now.

1999/2000 48,000 deaths, 2014/2015 44,000 deaths from flu.
Do you remember any panic or special regulations then?

Not sure what you mean but if I have to wear a mask I will (and always have) but will not avoid anyone wearing a mask where they are not required, but would expect them to avoid me (and the majority of everyone else) if they feel compromised or unsafe.

So what you are saying then, is that people are dying anyway, so what is a few more? The figures for the last two years will be vastly different. Guess why?

No. For anyone vulnerable it's essential that the rest of us wear masks. Masks aren't there to protect the wearer.
