Can you stream Britbox abroad or is it prevented by the system knowing you're in another country?

Don't know about Britbox specifically but if you are using a UK based sim for data roaming the other UK channels stream ok without a VPN which will be necessary if you use a local sim.
 
I don't know about Britbox, but when abroad last year I was able to watch/download stuff from the BBC iplayer when tethering to my (UK) phone, but not when using local wifi.
