Hello,
I am planning to drive from Italy through the Brenner pass, Innsbruck, Telfs, the Fern pass and then north to Menningen. Has anybody driven this route and could I please ask if it's "easy", if the roads are ok? All of this to avoid Munich as I have always found it a nightmare....
Many thanks for any help :)

About 6 years ag on our way to Lake Garda we stayed at Innsbruck for a couple of nights and planned to take the Brenner pass, after chatting to an Italian they said it would be cheaper via toll and 1/4 of the time.

I am planning to travel on a weekend, so no HGVs about (or only a few...). Which route did you take at the end?

Roads no problem, nice route.
Wolf a few km north of Brenna you can stop the night at Guesthouse Wolf if you by a meal.

If your gonna take the Brenner use the old pass, not thee tunnel
Scenery is wonderful and lots of places to stop for lunch etc
Fern pass is just like any other road but again a lovely road to drive
Done them repeatedly in the motorhome and of course the bike :-)

Thank you! Any suggestion on which route between Telfs and Nassereith ? The map gives a “choice” of two, one looking longer but straighter, the other one shorter but twisty....

Twisty every time... Time is about the same but the twisty is nicer

Our previous MH was over 3,5 ton so we used the Brenner Pass a few times to avoid Go Box. No problems a good road.

The road is good, no issues for anything up to coach size. As stated above take the pass and not the tunnel if you want the scenic trip.

I went over the Brenner pass to lake Guarda in August 2010 and it was nose to tail and walking pace on the autobahn, so bad that we came off and took the old road which at least was moving at a normal speed, so check travel reports before you go, would be my advice.

Jaws

What tunnel are we talking about on the Brenner?

We've done approximately this route (cut out Innsbruck) toll free (but before the Austrian toll thingy) nice route, thinking of doing it again next month.

Thanks for all the advice. Feel better now!

When we drove over the Brenner pass one September it was warm and sunny on the Italian side but snowing and bluddy freezing on the Austrian side.
