I dont know if its just a coincidence but the more I use my trumatic blown air heater the more headaches I get, the tighter my chest feels and the more I cough.
I live fulltime in a converted coach and this is yet another reason im thinking of jacking it all in.
Has anyone else had these problems, I have a carbon dioxide alarm so dont think its a blockage or something...?????

Hi Wynnie

I would switch it off and get some to check it before you carry on using it, just to be on the safe side

TURN IT OFF, DONT USE IT, GET IT CHECKED!!!!!!!

sounds to me like you are being poisoned by CARBON MONOXIDE gas.
you have some of the classic symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.....headaches, chest pain, coughing ect.
are you more tired than normal ?.

there could be a leak between the heat exchanger and the air ducts.

you wont have a CARBON DIOXIDE detector (this is the harmless gas they put in soft drinks to make them fizzy.) confusion is another symptom.

CARBON MONOXIDE is the same weight as air (almost)but it will rise with warm air so you probably have a big build-up of gas if its affecting you while sat down.

CO detectors are not infallable and just 'cos it sounds when you check it it doesnt mean its working properly. worthwhile fitting a second one to be sure.

the recommended distance from a gas appliance is 15ft, a small amount of CO is produced when an appliance is first lit, and on the ceiling of a warm, living environment.

please dont let this put you off using your motorhome, it could just as easily happen in a house but you wouldnt sell your house just 'cos of a gas leak..........or would you ??????

john.

Where is your alarm mounted - high or low near the floor.

Three main types of detectors used in MHs.
Smoke, CO (both of which are mounted high up on the wall or on the ceiling - but not close to the wall-ceiling junction)(also both available in the one unit), and LPG which is mounted very low to the floor.

Also check both ends of the flue and make sure both inner and outer tubes are properly secured.

Hi

As, has already been said the most common symptons of incomplete combustion is Nausa, headaches, dizziness, chest pains or palpitations.

The main causes of incomplete combustion is:

Poor Ventilation - If there is insufficient ventilation into the room in which the appliance is situated, there will be insufficient air to replace that used during the combustion process.

Over-gassing - if gas pressure is set too far in excess of the manufacturer's recommendations, or if the injectors are worn or oversized.

Under-aeration - even in a room where there is adequate ventilation, maladjustment of the primary ports or blockage to the lint filter, will prevent sufficient entrainment of primary air.

Poor flueing - a partially blocked or blocked flue will prevent the products of combustion from leaving the combustion chamber.

Vitiation - The air for combustion is dificient in oxygen, because, for example, combustion products are entrained as primary air, as could be the case with an appliance not having a satisfactory means of removing the products of combustion.

Inpingment - When one flame from a burner port is touching another flame or when the flame touches any part of the combustion chamber producing a chilling effect on the flame.

Other signs that incomplete combustion is taking place apart from your symptons are:

Soot marks or stains around the appliance
CO detectors being activated
An Emergency Service Provider having acted to turn off the appliance.

Note: Visual checks should be completed according to the type of sympton given. The checking of flame pictures etc, where suspected CO production is present, should be avoided for obvious reasons unless the room is well ventilated as a minumum.

I strongly suggest you get a 'competent' person out to it to do a performance test on it and sooner rather than later. You can go to the Corgi Website and from their home page you can be directed to another page where you can locate a competent person in your area.

If when he comes out he states that the appliance should be serviced first then he is probably telling you correctly. Appliances wit a cast iron heat exhanger (and I don't know if that applies to yours or not) should always be fully serviced due to the rust shale formation within it, which may drop onto the burner at any time.

Oh dear what a shame you men can't handle a woman knowing information apart from knitting, sewing, cooking etc. and don't be fooled in thinking I sourced this info from the net cause I didn't:Doh:

I will go even further and just add that may be if winnielafreak would like me to source them a 'competent' person then all he needs to do is pm me with information on:

Make and model number of appliance
Area he lives in

Can anyone point me in the direction of a trumatic heater service engineer ?
Ive googled, serched and YELL'd, my problem is the vehichle is currently garaged till I can find a grand and a half for the engine to be repaired and I live in it.
I contacted a corgi gas man who said it was a specialist thing, something to do with it being different gas. The motorhome repairers all want the bus taking to thier garage which isnt possible. I have little or no money and am stuck in the middle of nowhere ( burscough in lancashire) feeling like im being slowly poisoned....HELP !!

have a look through your yellow pages (or borrow one)for caravan repairers/maintainance engineers.
not much help to you but locally we have a mobile repairer/service engineer.
you generaly find the 'little' man is so much more helpful than the dealers/repairers.
cant understand why the corgi guy wouldnt do it.....its the same checks as for domestic appliances.

Hi Wynnielafreak

Firstly The Corgi man you spoke to is probably only certificated for Natural Gas and not LPG which is a different certification. If he is not certificated for LPG and the Leisure Accomodation Vehicle Sector appliances that go with it then he will not be registered to do any installation, testing or repairing.

Secondly does your Trumatic boiler heat your water and give blown air?. Give me the model no. as well

If you then give me a postcode I will try and locate you a corgi man but I definitely need to know what boiler you have because depending on the type it is will depict on what certification the engineer will need to have to test/repair it.

the same checks would apply to LPG appliances in Brick buildings and may be some residential park homes but not for the Leisure Accomodation Vehicles (rolling chassis stuff). The Corgi guy he spoke to was probably not certificated for that appliance or for that fuel type - actually there arn't many about. Most of the guys we test in our Gas Assessment Centre come from the likes of motorhome sellers, repairers etc like Brownhills, Lowdhams, Oaktree etc.

cheers pammy,

i thought if you were corgi registered that was it.......any type of gas appliance installation and testing. didnt realise there were different "departments", but they do all give off the same poisonous gas when they go wrong......dont they?

i would say doing a test for CO would not be a problem as long as he didnt do anything other than test and advise.

Hi Pammy
The Post code where I'm parked is L408JS and the Blown air heater is a Truma - Trumatic E2400.
What I cant understand is why doesnt my carbon monoxide alarm ( which is olny six months old) go off, some one suggested that the TEST button only test the actual alarm and not the sensor ?
I have a history of headaches so maybe im just being paranoid.
cheers

Hi John

Actually John, there are 74 listed categories (or departments as you call them) that a Corgi Registered operative can have. They all come under either Domestic, Commercial, Catering, LPG and Limited Scope (Meters).

And believe it or not, they have to be certificated now to even carry out a Combustion Performance Analysis (CO/CO2).

And I can feel Ollie breathing down my neck now

There are about 5 guys all located with half mile or so from your postcode.

One of them is the guy you have already spoken to, who cannot help you because he has just come out of hospital.

One guy is certificated for WAHLP1 (Blown air heaters) but cannot get to you for about 2 weeks

2 are not answering their phones

But there is a guy called Andy from:
Wolf Heating & Plumbing (226522) 0.71 Miles away
52 Higgins Lane Burscough
ORMSKIRK
Lancashire
L40 7SD
01704892373
07880993847

He is certificated for everything but WAHLP1. However he can do you a CO/CO2 check in your van which I think is what you should be having done. He is certificated to do it as well. Nice guy give him a call. :thumb:

Let me know how you get on.

hi pammy and co.
just had my bus checked over for nasty gasses and apart from the dog all he found was the water boiler doesnt have a flu and as I leave the pilot on this minimal amount of carbon monoxide was probably the cause of my symptoms. So I presume I dont now need the heater servicing, though I thought thats what he was comming for ? I hope not, the gas check was £40 for 5 minutes so god knows what a service costs ?

I said he was certificated in everything but WAHLP1 (blown air) but he could do you a CO check which is what I recommend anyway. What I can also tell you is that it is normal procedure to do a CO check on any appliance and then if necessary, depending on the ratio, would either suggest a partial service, full service, or classify it as 'At Risk', 'Not to Current Standards' or 'Immediately Dangerous'. The last 3 classifications are something you don't want I can tell you that. He also did you a favour as he quoted me £65 for the check. I suggest, and only if you feel comfortable with him, you keep his number just in case you need him again. After all he came out to you the same day. Reliability is always good in my book.:thumb:

Anyway at least you know now. Hope I was of some help. If you need any more info you know where I am.:thumb:
